These look nothing like the nutcrackers the ballet is named for, but they get the job done with fresh, new, contemporary looks:

- Heavy Metal Nutcracker at Mocha, £35
- CINO Nutcracker at Working Wonders, $35
- Christopher Kuh's uber-minimalist design

Commercial Flour Sa...
Um, that first one looks PAINFUL!
I only buy pre-cracked nuts... less stuff to store that way.
How does the first one really work? At the weblink it insists that only a "light tap" is needed to crack the nut, because of some metal piece under the rubber dome...but I've never met a walnut that requires only a light tap to crack it open.
The third one looks very stylish, but it seems working only for walnuts. And if I want to eat let's say hazelnuts or Brazil nuts I need to buy a another nutcracker. Not very minimalist.
On second thought the inventor is actually right. Minimalist in its uses.
My parents have one very similar to the third one and it works just fine for hazelnuts and brazils. You just screw down gently at first to make sure it grips it and then wind away. No problem.
Number 2 looks like you'd need to wear safety glasses!
I love Number 2. I really like minor demolition, and I think this would fulfill my destructive urges in a very beneficial, socially acceptable manner.
