Although most inner city gardeners don't have to worry about rogue deer hopping up on the balcony and snacking on their summer fare, deer can be a real problem in slightly more suburban and rural areas. Did you know you can help keep them away by what you plant in your garden?
Although the plants listed below will do a good job keeping your areas deer-free, desperate or just adventurous deer won't have a problem pushing past your plant barrier if they're hungry enough. But here are a few plants to get your garden started on deer patrol:
• Basil
• Chives
• Fennel
• Mint
• Lavender
• Lamb's Ear
• Morning Glory
• Bleeding Heart
• Thyme
• Sage
• Rosemary
• Rhubarb
• Chrysanthemum
• Freesia
• Ferns
Check out the rest of the list over at DIY Life as many are quite common and easy to grow in any zone!

White Enamel Flatwa...
this is a great list - but some horrible person planted morning glory at some point and it has spread and climbed everything - you can NOT get rid of it. I would avoid planting it directly in the ground - maybe in pots in the ground if you must......
Wow - my neighbours are ALWAYS complaining about how the deer eat everything in their garden while they totally avoid ours - and now I know why - almost everything on this list is what is in our backyard!
Mint is one of those that try to take over too - though it smells awesome when raking it in the fall.
Thank you for the list, we have lot of deer which I don't mind it's the nasty ticks that we have problems with, which is a big problem when you have every young children and have to inspect them all the time.
We don't have deer so much as moose. Moose don't like mint, and anything sprayed with melted Irish spring soap mixed with water or pieces of the bar soap hung from tree branches.
