Location: East San Diego County
Type: I own my tiny 2-bedrom cottage in the mountains east of San Diego
Why I use color: Color adds so much warmth and glowing light to a space. Too many blank white walls feel cold and empty to me. I love color for the inspiration it gives me, and have been known to choose a paint color based on it's name (the one I used here in my guest room is called "Spooky")
2 Good color tips:
1. The color wheel is your friend. Learning basic color principles is so helpful. Knowing what colors complement each other is invaluable when choosing how I want to decorate my house.
2. Don't be afraid of paint, or of making mistakes. It's not expensive and it's so easy to paint a room. You never know if you'll like a color until it's up on the walls. The guest room started out blue, had a coat
of Laura Ashley Heath green (for about a day) which was hideous, and then this pale silvery green, which suits the space perfectly. It's all about experimentation.
2 Good color resources:
1. Paint chips-I love Dunn-Edwards paint, every time I go there I pick up a few paint chips-some colors that I know I like and some unlikely colors, just to change my perspective a little.
2. Everyday objects-fabrics, sheets, towels, art prints. Really looking at things that we 'see' everyday is an endless source of inspiration. Sometimes I notice a color in a fabric print that I didn't see before,
it's a great way to discover what colors 'go' together that you might not have thought of yourself.
