Ok, who am I kidding? I really want some of these bookcases for myself. We've found some super fun and, frankly, crazy bookshelves that kids would love, if you can stand to let them out of your room.
These whimsical bookcases turn shelving into art. They look crazy, but they are built to be sturdy; if you're feeling nervous, just bolt them to the wall.
1. King of Siam bookcase by Studio Proxy: Go ahead and pretend you got your IKEA instructions wrong. Your kids will love it.
2. Handmade Stacked Teacups from Etsy Shop Wood Curve: Perfect for a little girl's room, especially if she loves Alice in Wonderland.
3. Oderso Modular Bookcase from Ding3000: This bookshelf can be configured in myriad combinations.
4. Bookcase No7 from Dust Furniture: The first book you have to put on this shelf is Green Eggs and Ham.
5. Equilibrium Bookcase from Malagana Design: As long as you can keep yourself from trying to catch this bookcase every time you see it, you're good to go.

These are cute, but the ones where the books lean are bad for the books--they ruin the spine. Not a problem for books you expect to get trashed, but don't keep books you care about on them.
So cute! Kids are bad for books anyway. Whadya gonna do?
Ridiiculous.
Totally fun! But what happens when the cats jump on the equilibrium set? I can not fugure that one out as an object to actually use...
Like them all - NEED #4. Actually might need a few to house my Dr S collection :)
I think it's better to be cautious in style decisions on bookshelves, though that Bookcase No. 7 looks to me like it could become a classic. In general, though, since bookshelves aren't a thing you'll want to throw away, you're better off getting something you and your children will still like to look at and use 10 years from now.
love the last two, and not just for a kids room!
