We love seeing the wide-eyed look of wonder on a friend's face when we introduce a great piece of tech to them. We have seen this look frequently when we share our latest tech acquisition, our iPad, and it is especially fun to see it on the eyes of a kid. Eager to share our iPad with our children and young friends, we began the search for age appropriate educational apps.
As a group of several former elementary school teachers there are some habits we just can't seem to break ourselves of, and one of these is looking at the education prospects of every device and app that we play with. We at Unplggd love delving into kid tech and with our education backgrounds coming into play we knew it was time for an educational iPad app roundup tailored for kids. Here are some of our top picks of great educational iPad apps for kids:

What's the Difference?
What's the Difference is a great app that can keep kids from ages 2 to 90 occupied for quite some time. Recently, we were using the app with a 4 and 2 year old and it was difficult to tell who was loving the app more. The app does exactly what you think it would, it provides side by side images that are almost identical (but with 5 differences) and allows the user to race around the clock trying to spot the differences. Because it relies on images, once a game is set up, no reading is needed making it great for the youngest iPad users. Free.
Tangram XL
We loved taking out the box marked "Tangram" as a child and could not help but feel delight when our young friend enjoyed using the iPad version of the puzzle toy we have long loved. Tangram is made up of several shapes which you use to create pictures. The iPad app is responsive as well as forgiving making it an app that works well and engages a variety of ages. Because of the difficulty of many of the puzzles it's not an app to be regarded as solely for kids. The logic and reasoning that is required to sort out the puzzles can be a turn off for some young users, so be sure to start with the simpler puzzles in order to build up confidence. Free.

RedFish - C is for Cake
In this simple app built for the Pre-K set, little ones interact with ingredients in order to make a cake. This simple puzzle helps to children to work on their dexterity as well as shape recognition and the conclusion of the puzzle rewards them with a finished cake. As adults we like the educational aspects of the app and we also appreciate the design of the app with its clean lines and great color scheme. No obnoxious headache inducing colors here! Free.
Math Magic
Remember flashcards? Well, think of this app like interactive flashcards that are a bit more visually appealing than tattered index cards. Math Magic frames addition, subtraction, and division problems like a game and really engages young learners. Because the app supports multiple operations as well as negative numbers, it can be used by those kindergartners learning simple addition to the more complicated division encountered by third graders, it is really quite the value for the mere cost of $0.99.

Star Walk
We love love love this Apple Design Award winning app and really cannot say enough great things about it. Being so accustomed to free apps, we at first balked at the $4.99 price tag of this app, but after using the app we feel that it was well worth the price. Not only a great educational tool, it is also just plain beautiful. Star Walk uses your location and customizes the app, letting you see your night sky in new ways by taking you on a virtual tour through the stars, constellations and planets. Although this is an app that works for all ages, we can especially see it as being helpful for kids studying the solar system and budding astronomers.

Z2 iPod Dock and Wi...
Our favorite app on the ipadis actually an iphone one, but it scales OK:
Feed me!
You have to feed a monster with the results of the questions he asks.
I was surprised to watch my 3 years old going enthusiastically through all the questions, learning his letters and numbers without paying attention. Lovely!
My 3 y.o. loves 123 Tracer and ABC Tracer on my iphone, especially the games where you pop numbered or alphabetic balloons in the correct order. We have an ipad on order (mostly) for him.
Really appreciate this list - we are on the hunt for meaningful apps for our kid too. It's great that there are so many classic games like tangrams can be captured on the iPad - and some really great ones that are free.
We started a site to try to list the apps that have been meaningful from a learning/development standpoint for our kid - http://apps4ikids.com - with a heavy belief that there needs to be balance, but used well - pretty excited to see the potential of the iPad as well as the other iOS devices.
meaningful educational apps we like: smartyK
(smartyshortz company) My daughter uses in her school so we use at home, it's great
There is a new app called Homework that helps kids learn their vocabulary. You enter your word lists and record your word and then kids can practice and take tests. My wife loves it because the kids want to play on the phone, so this way they must pass their spelling test first. No pass, no play. It also makes it saver to do spelling in the car since our son can practice with the iPhone and mom does not have to read spelling words while driving.

Me and my partner have created a couple of learning apps for kids used to help learn their math tables. A lot of learning apps we've seen are kind of complicated for young children, so we have created simple to use apps that have the same function as flash cards with the ability to shuffle and sort. Each app contains the tables 1-12, has backgrounds for boys or girls to choose from, and is great for kids just beginning to learn their math tables. We are always looking for good learning app ideas for kids, so if any one has anything they would like to see, post on here and we can see what most people are looking for.

Please permit me to introduce you to a new children’s educational game for the iPad and iPhone:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/counting-beads/id441820190?mt=8&ls=1#
Counting Beads is a totally fun way for children to learn numbers and letters of the alphabet. The numbers (or letters) appear as colored beads that you connect by dragging each bead into its next higher numbered bead. As you connect the beads in numbered order, you create a chain that follows the lead bead as you drag. This teaches the numbers visually. You can also move the bead chain by holding the device face-up parallel to the floor and tilting it slightly to let gravity roll the leading bead downhill. Even older folks can have fun with this amusing simple game.
A brief demo video of this app is available on UTube:

Star Walk is pretty incredible. My child's other favorite app is called Math Monkey:
http://goo.gl/RxOQA
Math Monkey is like an educational "Angry Birds" and helps him practice addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. It's the best babysitter I've found!
Great suggestions, I'll get my 5 year old on it!
I have my two year old learning new words off this one also, which works very well... simple, but very easy for him to navigate (called "Push and Learn"):

My son has really benefited from an app called "Math - Grade K" for the iPad. It is a simple, no frills app that lets kids practice their addition, subtraction and comparison. It increases the difficulty automatically as they answer correctly.

I bought the Walter Foster Learn to Draw apps on sale a while back, and my kids LOVE them. They can draw on the iPad without the mess of paper and different pens, and if they want to share, the drawings just save to my photos.
I think this is it. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/learn-to-draw-digital-sketchbook/id384300160?mt=8
When my daughter's teacher asked us to practice her math facts (ex: sets of numbers that add up to a number) we found Hungry Fish.
In Hungry Fish the fish swims around with the same number on it for all of a level. Bubbles float around on the screen and you have to push the bubbles together to add up (or subtract) to the number on the fish. The fish eats the "right" bubbles and grows, or shrinks in some modes if you take too long.
You can set the difficulty, and purchase the subtraction or negative number modules. Addition is free. My 4 year old enjoys the easier levels, while my 7 year old likes the harder ones. The longer the kids play, the more points they get, and they get to customize their fish with new features (different types of fins, colors, eyes, etc), but they have to keep playing to add to the ways they can change their fish. They also can name their fish and each have their own game.
I've had it on my phone for four months, and my kids still enjoy playing it.
Hungry Fish. :)
