If you haven't already got an indoor herb garden going, now is the time to start one. Just imagine how much better the winter will be with fresh basil, sage, and mint by the window. Surfing Flickr, we were inspired by two windowsill gardeners…
…who seem to have a knack for growing plants indoors. Their photos illustrate how a little creativity and time can have great results. We love the fact that eskay 8 used teacups to plant parsley, while the time-lapse look at dogeared's garden demonstrates that it takes less than a month to get a good crop going.

I've never been able to keep rosemary alive, anyone know the secret?
Wow, my rosemary stays alive all through the winter, even with frosts. It's the only plant I can't kill. I don't have a secret, but I have noticed it's in the spot of my patio garden that gets the hottest in the spring/summer.
To ec05: In my experience, rosemary likes sandy soil and lots of sun. Don't overwater and keep it pinched down so it doesn't get too woody.
My herbs did wonderfully outside, but as soon as I brought them inside, they started to die a slow death.
Gee, I would love to grow herbs successfully indoors but I've never had much luck.
This year we brought a big bushy sage inside but the leaves keep drying up and turning brown before falling off. It's really sad.
I planted a big peppermint in a pot outside this summer to keep it from taking over. It's on its last legs inside now. It would have wintered over planted in the ground, but not in the pot, so next year I think I'll put some in an out of the way spot (by the compost bin) and let it do its thing.
AT should do a post on how to grow an indoor herb garden and keep them alive. I want one so bad, but I have a hard enough time keeping the regular plants alive, especially during brutally cold Detroit winters.
Any tips for cat owners? I've read that most of the herbs I'd like to eat (parsley, basil, oregano) are safe for my cat as well, but what can I do to keep him out of them indoors? My window options are limited (only 2 get about 8 hours light), and Chaos will even come sniffing at my celery and onion bag before I put up the groceries. He's ruthless with attacking anything green indoors and I've kinda given up plants minus one philodendron hiding way up on a china cabinet ...and I've even seen teeth marks on that one on occasion. (And yes, I try to keep growing kitty grass just for him in his window.)
