Working the kinds of hours I've been working, I can't spare an entire weekend to get out to Palm Springs or drive up the coast to Santa Barbabra, so I've been getting creative in finding afternoon escapes from the daily grind. The Raven Spa in Silver Lake: Basically the quickest way to get transported abroad. Walking into the Raven is like walking into Morocco: trickling fountains, cool tile, linen curtains gently moving in the breeze. I got a terrific Thai Massage here last weekend when I really needed one and then just hung out on a lounge chair for a while soaking it all in.
Getting Lost in A Design Mag: Sometimes it's all about ignoring the piles of laundry and dust bunnies accumulating in every corner and just picking up a design magazine and allowing 30 minutes of decompression time. My favorite right now is At Your Leisure curated and designed by former AT contributor Jonathan Lo. (Get copies here.)
Window Shopping: Whether it's strolling Abbot Kinney and checking out my favorite stores Tortoise and A + R, or cruising Sunset Junction and Mohawk General Store, it's good to get out of the house, break the routine and feed my visual library with new things.
Local Fancy Hotels: Rebecca had the idea a while ago and as the weather heats up I'm considering taking a dip in a fancy LA hotel for the price of a good strong cocktail.
Other People's Homes: When my house is too messy and all I can think of are chores to do, it's best to unwind somewhere else. Lately Abby's house has been a good stop. It's cooler (in temp) than mine and she has tons of space for lounging and always has food in the fridge ;). It's a great escape, and a good opportunity to catch up with things unrelated to work.
Where do you find escape when you're pressed for time?
