So many of the decorating ideas on this website come from human beings, so today we've decided to turn for advice to the most important people you will ever have in your home: cats. Two feline interior design experts, Fluffy and Mr. Schnoogums, graciously agreed to sit down (well, plop down) with me and discuss some of their favorite new trends for 2015.
Fluffy: Yarn is really big right now. I’m hearing from a lot of people that yarn is really big. But to get the best effect, you need to leave it out. Preferably down low. Not in a cabinet or anything.
Mr. Schoogums: Yeah, it definitely looks best when it’s close to the floor.
2. Shelves with nothing on them.
MS: I think a lot of people really misunderstand the purpose of a shelf. A shelf is not to put things on. The shelf itself is the point.
F: I get so sad when I see all these shelves in all these houses, crowded with books and knick-knacks. What a waste of a good shelf. When people walk into your house and see your empty shelves, perhaps accented with a cat or two, your good taste will be immediately apparent.
3. Empty cardboard boxes.
F: This is such an easy trend to get into, I’m surprised everyone’s not doing it. I mean, it’s so simple. Just order something from Amazon, throw it away, and leave the box open on your floor. Bam, instant chic accent piece.
MS: I can’t overemphasize how great these look. And if you’re not satisfied with just one, try a grouping of multiple boxes, in different sizes.
4. Dishpans full of grass.
MS: This one is really new but I can see it having a lot of possibilities.
F: Much better than a houseplant. Houseplants are boring. Unless you can eat them.
F: I especially like Sunshine when combined with Shelves with Nothing on Them. A sunbeam falling on a cardboard box or a dishpan full of grass can be really nice, too.
MS: Sunshine is a real classic. And it's free. Much like the love of your favorite cat.
