It remains to be seen whether the hilarious Put at Bird on It! skit from IFC's Portlandia that satirizes the indie design and DIY world's obsession with animals (birds in particular), will keep the trend going strong or drive it to extinction. Given that birds have a long history as a decorative motif — no matter how sick of them we may get at times — my guess is they'll be around for awhile.
In honor of my trip to Portland, Oregon last weekend and with no particular rhyme or reason, here are a few of my favorite birds in decor that exist a bit outside the same-old-same-old.

Those plates are really cute. Also? Having never seen the skit, it reminds me of this.
Those plates are cute -- and prohibitively expensive. 60$ for one? I will pay for quality, handmade items, but those are thrift-store finds dressed up with special paint/glaze. Ridiculous.
The top left plate in the first photo is from Royal China's Blue Heaven line, manufactured in the 60s... It's actually my everyday china. I'm almost sad to see the plate painted over, since I've been having a hard time finding bowls and whatnot. Definitely not expensive -- I think the most I've paid for a single plate is $1.50.
Birds are such a hopeful motif - it's great to find them decorating almost anything...
They inspire me.

I like having lots of depictions of birds around, too. Actual birds are not only pretty and colorful, they usually seem to be having a great time. The small parrot flocks that frequently fly overhead here often sound as if they were laughing so uncontrollably that I call them the original party animals.
I am so guilty of putting a bird on it...for at least 10 years now! :p I still love it though!
Birds are OVER! Not really...but they need to be used sparingly as a decor motif, IMHO.
