• Intaglios. We've seen these little plaster forms skyrocket in decor popularity in the last decade. Put them in modern frames, group them in multiples, line a hallway. They always look crisp and refined, but simple enough not to appear stuffy.
• Gilt frames and mirrors. Maybe it's that they're so eye-catching and so over-the-top, but gilt frames can get away with murder… ok, not murder, but definitely trespassing. You'd think these flashy beasts would read pretentious, or turn a room gaudy, but often in high contrast settings they can actually make a room appear lived in and relaxed.
• Mercury Glass Mirrors. Age usually elicits at least the air of refinement, wisdom, and intrigue, which is exactly what makes these murky mirrors so attractive. The patina alludes to a story, without the country flair of chipping paint.
• Maps. Unless you've been living under a rock, you've seen maps grace all sorts of rooms… probably on this blog… probably within the last five minutes. Kids' rooms, bathrooms, on the ceiling, they work just about anywhere.
• Busts. Even seeing them flung far and wide across blog land, I'm still intrigued by busts. They can be pretentious, light-hearted, ironic, austere, but they always make a statement.
What other classics would you add to the list?

Do books count? Because I always feel better in a room with books. Also I always try to figure out what books people are reading in rooms shown on AT.
But maybe I love books a little too much.
I agree with books. But do you really think anyone reads the books featured in any room on AT? I think books are a great decorative element if they're books you've actually read and have a connection to. My pet peeve is books that serve only a decorative function -- they exist only to make the owner look somehow smarter than s/he is. See FYNCT for good examples..
Agree with most, except for busts. I just don't 'get' them, definitely don't appreciate them.
SUSANINTORONOT: I don't get busts either.
Not a fan of decorating w/maps but they way they did the one for Italy is just brilliant.
The 1st pic is a bit boring for me but maybe because everything is so white washed and I do like color.
If I had to chose, I'd go with the mercury mirror. I thought it was an art piece at first.
Agree, I appreciate a bookshelf filled with books read!
I like busts, but I've never actually seen one pulled off in a room before. I like the intaglios and LOVE gilted mirrors.
Agree with the busts opinions, I don't get them either, especially when there is more than one.
I love ornate mirrors, and unlike other large decorative elements I think they become less over-the-top with size - because the mirror part just reflects what's in the room and in a large mirror the frame is a much smaller percentage of the whole than it is in a smaller mirror.
Also, absolutely LOVE that fragmented map of Italy in the 4th picture!
That segmented map of Italy (in multiple frames) is fantastic.
I like bust in a room but can I say there are an awful amount of ugly ones out there on the market. It has to be the right one. I typically do not like well known figures either.
I like architectural figures such as a pediment or a good looking wooden cog from a mill.
I love busts! Especially when you add it to a super modern room for some serious contrast.
love the map, but more than anything books, and i fully agree they need to be books you have a connection with - nothing makes a room like well worn books - one reason i still buy books i loved in hard copy after reading them on the ipad
Books, definitely. I'd say a (living) plant, too. It may not work well for all rooms--bathrooms optional--but they do show life and love (unless they're dead and brown. If that's you, please choose an excellent faux plant. Jade & bamboo are also very easy to care for (water when obviously needed because it's looked half dead for a month). To me, they help make a space feel fresher, more alive.
I'll stand by my Beethoven bust any day!
