Yesterday, I was at my cousin's house. Are these the same couches? I asked. Her couches looked different but I couldn't pinpoint exactly why. She explained that, using the extra fabric she'd bought when she purchased them, she'd made a few small but significant changes that had given them a whole new look!
If you're ready to take the next step beyond just changing up accent pillows or want a change but are not quite prepared to buy a new sofa, enlist the aid of your upholsterer to give your couch another chance. Using the same fabric that your couch is upholstered in, you can:
Add or remove a skirt: While exposed legs look unmistakably modern, covering up the legs by adding a fabric panel can make a sofa more formal or make it shabby chic casual. Or, remove the skirt on a couch to expose its legs and lighten it up.
Add or remove cushion buttons: An upholsterer can easily add buttons to the back, seat or both cushions of a couch to bring it from informal to more tailored. Removing buttons can relax the look of your sofa.
Add bolster pillows to a couch: Give a sleek modern couch a bohemian look by adding bolster pillows on either end made of the same fabric.
Take your couch from tight back to cushion back: If your couch has a tight back, try loosening up its streamlined vibe by adding 3 Euro-sized pillows across the back
Try a slipcover: You can buy a standard one or have your upholsterer tailor make one for your couch. I'm cosidering having one made out of white duck (along with cases for my couch's loose cushions) so that next summer I can quickly morph my sleek metal legged modern sofa into something beachy for summer.

I assume the buttons were added since there's no before pic. Nice couches!
Is that Macy's Margaret sofa? I had my eye on it in cocoa... but they discontinued it before I could top out my sofa fund. Grrr.
Worse, in it's place they have the same sofa but with a left or right chaise... (not interchangable/ movable) which was too big for my space. Jerks!
So... what change did your cuz make?
Those are lovely couches. I bit the bullet and ordered some slipcovers to change the look of my furniture. They haven't arrived yet, but I'm excited to try them out.
Exactly clickchick! Abby, what is the resolution to the story??
Also, Couch: Crate & Barrel Petra (from article linked in photo credit)
I like her coffee table!
anyone have any ideas on how to make a slipcover for a semi-attached-cushion sofa?
my sofa is in dire need of a cover, and i would like one that looked tailored, instead of the sure-fit ones.
Wonderfully clean, serene room. I'd like to know what changes were made.
We never did find out what the cousin did. Tease.
@erinpearce: you can have a slipcover custom made with elastic in the places where the cushions meet the rest of the furniture. I would have whomever does the slipcover add a way for it to attach to the furniture near the elastic as well to decrease any slippage.
It's actually the "Petrie" sofa from Crate & Barrel... and it's 36 inches deep!!! Be still, my heart!!
You're missing the 'H' in reupholstering!! OOPS!
Not sure what they looks like previously but they look great now! :)
Does anyone know where the ceiling light fixture is from? I love it!
Ditto! That light fixture is gorgeous! Where's it from?
so is this picture unrelated to what you saw at your cousin's house? I'm confused...
Light fixture looks like this one from CB2 (there's a smaller version but not exactly the same style).

I doubt it goes along with the story. I doubt that story even happened.
Lol. Made up stories and misspelled words...chaos at AT? Hahaha
I removed the skirt from my Grandmother's reupholstered (in the 60's -- orange!) sofa, and it looks so different and much more contemporary!
sure, just run it down to your local upholsterer.
@confounded - that's hilarious! Good Find!!! :)
"your upholsterer" is going to charge as much for these "easy changes" or for a custom slipcover as it would cost you for a new sofa.
I too am questioning this post.
Never order furniture from Macy's! 3 months, and I am still waiting for the Chloe velvet sofa.
What can be done to distressed leather?
It does not look like that Petrie sofa (which if you read the reviews at C&B is not something I would order) has been altered in the least.
Yeah sharp_jeremy, cuz don't we all have an upholsterer right down the street...just send your butler on over with your sofa in tow.
Wait - isn't the picture meant to represent a "before?" This is not sarcasm. Though I luvvvved @confounded's "I doubt that story even happened." LOL!
