If you have a carpet of any quality - please do not use a pressure washer on it. Handwashing it out on clean pavement or on a deck is fine, but be very cautious about what sort of cleaners you use. If you have a handwoven wool or silk rug, the dyes and fibers would get very damaged by a pressure washer.
Think of the carpet like an antique fabric which should be handled and cleaned gently with a very dilute solution of cleanser. If you use a dilute detergent (like woolite), make sure you rinse very, very well. Any residue will cause the carpet to get very dirty very fast as dirt will stick to the residue. Wash both sides of the carpet and, finally, don't let it dry in the sun! The sun will effectively bleach out color.
