Thrift shops outside New York, IKEA, and the street

What inspired you?

Living on a fellowship, while trying to finish my PhD dissertation (before medicare kicks in), I needed to see how simply/cheaply I could live. I moved to deepest Brooklyn, cut my possessions down to the bare essentials I needed for work, and put a total moratorium on spending, yet tried to construct little vignettes in my space which would keep me from feeling deprived/depressed....

...Minus the ancient IKEA sofabed, the total cost of everything in the apartment is probably under $200; much of it is from the street. I don’t plan to live like this forever (and I still salivate over the DWR catalog), but my head feels clearer.

Design Tip:

Have at least a general idea of what you want to do with a space before you start accumulating lots of unrelated things.
