We have huge acorns all around our apartments right now and I've been so tempted to scoop them up for projects but is it bad I don't because I feel guilty taking food away from all the squirrels who depend on it?
also, for anyone who has had/made acorn flour- can you describe the taste? I'd assume it could be used interchangeably with other nut meals but can't say I've ever munched on acorns to know what they'd taste like.
Acorns are supposed to be very bitter before they've been processed, so you wouldn't munch on them.
Squirrels these days in urban areas rely more on trash cans, so don't feel bad about crafting. At worst, if you're really worried, just take the caps and do those projects.
Make sure your acorns are bug free before reusing them for anything! I collected a bunch from a local park last autumn for a centerpiece. A week later we were wondering where all the flies were coming from. When we saw the maggots crawling out of the acorns, we knew. GROSS!
