- Locavore: Want to create a menu using local goods? This app will automatically detect which state you’re in and lists what foods are in season in your area, where the closest farmer's markets are, and links to Epicurious recipes that use the local ingredients you're interested in.
- Michael Ruhlman's Ratio: We admit it. We're especially bad at recalculating ingredient amounts when tweaking a recipe. Luckily this calculator figures out how much more or less you need when customizing a recipe to serve as many as you need.
- Smart Chef Substitutions: Run out of an ingredient mid cooking? Don't run to the grocery store just yet. This app helps you find an alternative you have at home to substitute in. Or if you're bored of making the same recipe, this app will suggest ways to spice it up to make it new again.
- Fromage: Ever gone to your local cheese shop and felt a bit dim about the selection. Avoid buying cheeses you may not enjoy by referencing this iPhone app, which details the flavors and pairings of 650 different cheeses. You can even rate tastes you've tried, so you remember which ones were a hit and which were a miss.
- CookWell: A cooking class for $2.50?! Yup. This app teaches you everything from preparing the kitchen and planning ahead to what essentials you need in the kitchen. Also includes a 7-Day meal plan, daily assignments, and kitchen tips.
- Don't Eat That: Ever looked at the ingredients label on a package and wondered what one or more ingredients mean? What is Polysorbate 60 anyway? This app helps decipher what ingredient labels mean and, further, lets you know what ingredients to avoid like Polysorbate 60, one of the many frightening parts of a Twinkie.

Since not everyone owns an iPhone, could we also have some alternatives for android users? These programs look great, but it's really frustrating to have nothing but iPhone apps. I know y'all are apple freaks but come on. A little variety would be awesome.
I agree with you Kay, at least in theory. But the onus is really on the user here. Now that I know such an app exists for the iPhone I think I might go take a look in the Android Marketplace to see if it's there too. Many developers are creating apps for all of the popular platforms. If it's not available for Android I'd ask the developer to create it. It's really not Unplugged's job to search out Android apps if none of the writers actually use Android. However, if the writers want to take the extra time to search the various app stores so that they can write more information-complete stories (and allow us, the readers, to remain passive consumers) I'm sure some of us would appreciate it.
Kay: your input has been noted and taken to heart. As mobile apps grow across the board, we'll be more than willing to extend coverage to the Android Marketplace. Right now, the market seems to dictate that the best cooking apps are on the iPhone/Touch platform (and sure to grow even more so once the iPad launches), but the likelihood Android offerings will grow alongside and so will our coverage outward.
you forgot Jamie Oliver's 20 minute meals and Martha's everyday cooking.... and epicurious as well.
I use Converter and Grocery IQ. Thanks for the tips for these other ones, I'll check them out.
Two years ago a friend chief cook, The Pastorale a two stars restaurant in the guide Michelin in Belgium),asked me to develop a kitchen timer, fit for haccp and with a high visibility.Upon till now, some twenty friend cooks accepted the chalenge to utilize the koronos timer in their kitchen.I hope this msg has some added value for those guys who are looking for an accurate kitchen timer. Like to hear from you on the blog. See apps : Koronos timer.
I hadn't heard of the Smart Chef Substitutions app, just bought it because I run into that problem all of the time. My wife uses the Ratio app for baking all of the time. Personally, I don't plan many meals without the Epicurious app these days. It has a great search feature so you can narrow down the huge number of recipes they include in the app. The shopping list is great too. helps me not forget stuff while I am in the store.
Shameless plug....try our Grill-It! app if you like to cook outdoors! We love feedback.

Great list... kinda glad you didn't list ones like Epicurious, we already know that's a great app. Found Ratio app to be really useful. Great pick! Another great app if you're doing a lot of baking or cooking a big meal is KitchenPad Timer (http://itunes.apple.com/app/kitchenpad-timer/id401572843?mt=8).
