Joan Crawford may have famously hated wire hangers but I bet she would have loved wire shelving. Whether used in a storage room or as furniture in another part of the house, wire shelving is easily customized, quickly installed and can support heavy loads. Check out five stores that stock with durable shelving…
• Container Store carries the InterMetro brand of wire shelving. You can purchase it by the piece to customize your design or as a pre-designed kit.
• IKEA has their own brand of wire shelving called OMAR (pictured above). Theirs doesn't have as many options as InterMetro but the price is much lower.
• Lowe's stocks the Style Selections brand of wire shelving and accessories.
• Target carries a few different wire shelving brands – Room Essentials, Whitmor and Seville. Shelving is only sold as complete sets so there's not much chance for customization.
• U-Line, the shipping supplies catalog, carries wire shelving sets and accessories in both chrome and black.

Help.
I have open shelving like this in my kitchen and would like to close the sides of one shelf to put food magazines and cook books there. Is there a standard fix for this? do any of these kits allow you to add some sort of side wires, side x's something that would work for books?
One thing you could do is to put the magazines in a magazine holder and use that as an end brace. Stack some books flat -- heavy ones, little used on the bottom, and put the other books between the two "braces." Also, a heavy, attractive jar/cannister filled with something (beans? pebbles? sea shells) could also serve as an end brace.
@jinefizzh: I bought my wire shelving from webstaurantstore.com (I bought their well-priced Regency brand, though they also carry the more expensive Metro brand). They have every wire shelving accessory you can imagine. I use their shelf dividers for bookends, but they also carry "grid enclosure panels" for the sides of shelving units:

Also check out Global Industrial for a variety of wire shelving components:
