Bedrooms should be a place where you linger and relax. Besides a soft spot to lay your head, what is it that a bedroom needs to keep you coming back for more? Read 7 tips that will lead to bedtime enlightenment after the jump!
I recently repainted my bedroom and bed. I'm happy with the outcome, but it's still lacking the serenity and coziness that I'm seeking. After spending some time peeking through Living Etc.'s Cozy Bedroom Gallery, I noticed a few key elements that seem to be a common thread throughout the pictorials. I combined these elements with a few of my own bedroom essentials to give you some ideas on turning your bedroom into a sacred space.
1. Embrace Minimalism.
This is a difficult one for me, but it seems to be the most important. To create calm in the bedroom, free it of clutter, not just the floor, but the walls too. Choose one or two pieces of art for one wall and leave the rest alone. Apply a "less is more" approach to the furnishings also.
2. Take the Plushness Plunge.
We've all heard this before, but spending a little extra on plush bedding is key. There is nothing better than sinking into a cozy comfortable bed. Spring and summer are great times to purchase down comforters and feather beds on sale, so start saving now!
3. A Noteworthy Night Stand
A sturdy bedside tabletop is another key element. Having a place to rest your glass of water and/or favorite book is key to your overall comfort and relaxation. I lived without a nightstand for years and it was quite stressful. I was always knocking my water glass over in the morning and cleaning the floor is not how anyone wants to start their day!
4. Let There be Light.
Lighting is important in the bedroom. Natural sunlight is amazing during the day, but dimmed mood lighting is essential at night. Replacing your switch with a dimmer switch isn't too difficult or expensive. A bedside lamp is also a great way to add subtle light at night.
5. A Rug to Hug.
Have you ever hugged a rug with your feet? The right rug can give you a tiny foot massage before stepping into bed. Look for a thick shag rug or soft sheepskin for best results.
6. Scent-sational.
Picking the right scent for your bedroom is a matter of taste, but hands down the most popular essential oil for relaxation is Lavender. Caldrea Lavender Pine Linen Spray is amazing, or dab a little lavender oil directly to your pillow. Just be careful as the oil can stain pillow covers, sheets and comforters!
7. Take a Seat.
Having a place to sit down and remove your socks and shoes makes life a little easier. Whether it be a small side chair or a bench at the foot of your bed, try to make room for secondary seating.
Hope these tips help you on your path to nighttime Nirvana. Do you have any other ideas on how to create serenity in the bedroom? We would love to hear them!

My zero gravity chair lives in my bedroom, next to the window. Lovely for reading, self-hypnosis, and working on the computer. Oh how I love that chair.
I need a tutorial on how to make my ceilings and walls look those in the picture. So beautiful!
Buy a big dresser with lots of drawers - There's no such thing as too much closed storage!
I love a soft, serene wall color to make a bedroom restful. Throw in a neutral coverlet with a little bit of bold print in pillows so the room doesn't get boring. And I totally agree, my comfy bed is the best!
"I lived without a nightstand for years and it was quite stressful."....I love you, Apartment Therapy.
Wonderful tips. For me, no TV, no computer, no phone, no radio— all essential to quieting my busy pace and mind. You get the idea. And the only books allowed are intended for fall-asleep reading, a few pages at most, to help my eyes close; so, only witty and well written humor essays gain entry. La pièce de résistance is a silk sheathed lavender eye pillow. Ahh, blissful sleep.
that rug is so fluffy im gonna diiiieee!!!! =D
Sorry, Honey. I'm sleeping on the rug tonight.
I hung my great-grandmother's silk and lace wedding night gown-made in Paris in the 1880's -on a beautiful hanger on the back of a hook on the bedroom door. The elegance, beauty and personal history of this garment have a comforting effect on me.
I also like lots of pillows-not necessarily frilly ones-for the bed. I really love a case I just made from an old linen sheet. It's crisp and luxurious.
I keep my hand sewing near the bed and often sew before going to sleep. It is calming and relaxing.
While beautiful, the photo above is a Feng Shui nightmare. Never, ever sleep under an exposed beam. From the subconscious POV it'threatens you' while you are vulnerable(asleep). Other than that problem it is a tranquil and inviting space.
I absolutely love the bedroom in the photo above. I'm always drawn to big, fluffy, white bedding, but I've never bought due to concerns about it staying bright and clean (especially with a crazy Jack Russell who sleeps on it - and she isn't leaving!).
Do any of you think this is a legit concern, or know from experience how white bedding fares?
p.s. as I read the "tips for a cleaner bedroom" post, I wanted to add... my dog is mostly white and never muddy in bed :) I also wash my sheets... so, white bedding?
Great tips! I'll have to put these in practice.
Two matching nightstands, please. And no heavy beam energy pressing down from overhead (solution: paint the beams white). :)
Dear AT folks: Can nothing be done about the increased amount of spam that's been showing up on AT lately? It's getting to be seriously annoying.
@ Lauren252
The easiest solution would be to try a white duvet cover....the look you want and you can keep it crisp and white easier :-)
Has anyone ever noticed that photographs of great bedrooms rarely contain a dresser? Much less the two dressers that most couples need who share a bedroom. The use of our bedroom as a changing room is the number one source of clutter -- but how to outsource that function? A separate dressing room seems overkill, plus most apartment dwellers simply don't have the space.
Lauren252 - I have mostly used all white sheets in all of the 19 years I had my jrt, he passed away in Aug. RIP..:((
I change my duvet cover and sheets weekly and I let them presoak in the washer before washing for about 15-20 min.
I use washing soda/borax with a bar of soap like Ivory combo..I make my own laundry soap it works much better than any commercial brand. I wash them in cold water and my sheets are bright white and some are more than 8 years old and still look brand new.
I'm a little late responding here, but thank you JessRobinson and b77 for your comments! I'm very much considering some new white bedding :)
Also, b77 - so sorry to hear of your loss. I'm sure that your pup's 19 years were wonderful and he will be missed!
