1. Design duo Younger & Ziskin took over Anna Bautista's private home, merging retro mid century elements into a brand new loft space.
2. Bridget Sweeney's whole bedroom is bright and contemporary, polished off with the rocker chair that lights up the corner.
3. Warren and Mimi gave their twins an adorable shared nursery complete with primary green rocking chair.
4. Kara and Ken use beautiful white decor to bring out the natural flooded light in their condo.
5. Melissa made room for a compact desk and chair, in the living room of her home. Her whole house felt quaint and beachy, and the chair added something special to its atmosphere.
6. Savannah's uber stylish studio is tiny indeed, but does not lack substance what so ever. For her birthday she treated herself to this beloved blue rocker.
7. Everything about Sophie and Isaac's cute apartment is a nod to retro style, but what a great surprise to see this in their bathroom.

I have come to the conclusion, recently, that I must be the only person in the world who doesn't really care for Eames chairs.
just seven homes with eames chairs? doesnt every single post on AT feature eames chairs? i mean, it thought every single person had eames chairs after i started reading this site.
I second caiti.
Also, it's "a common sight" not "a common site" - sorry to nitpick. I'm crazy on the grammar.
hehehe...I thought the SAME thing "doesn't everyone have an Eames chair?!" The other day, my toddler asked me for an Eames Rocker in her room. She doesn't remember having one when she was super little (it was moved to another room after she was caught banging metal objects on it...now if only I can keep the pets off these chairs...http://www.flickr.com/photos/heelapatelladenburg/4277070004/in/set-72157622883841762/)
I love the white dowel base chairs around the table!!! Those are totally on my wishlist. Maybe I'll be able to get them next time Modernica holds its sale.
:-)
Now you're just baiting all the haters to come out of the woodwork.
Some people obviously dislike Eames chairs, and that's fine, but these chairs are ubiquitous for a variety of reasons: they're generally afforable, reasonably comfortable (to many, but not all, people), colorful, and simple enough to blend in to a variety of settings. That last attribute is the reason we see so many of them on Apartment Therapy!
So don't hate, appreciate! Seriously, if you don't like Eames chairs, don't buy one. But there's really no point in, every time an Eames chair appears on AT, posting, "I hate Eames chairs!" It's not going to make them go away.
I don't hate Eames chairs, but I do get tired of looking at them. I sometimes wonder if people wait up to submit their homes for house tours until after they've acquired at least one Eames chair.
Agree, agree, agree, with the above... There seems to be a very simple checklist to AT House Tours:
- Eames chair
- iMac
- IKEA Expedit
- Midcentury something
"you don't own an Expedit?? SHUUUUUUUNNN!"
Oh, and hide yo tv's, cuz AT apparently hates those.
[/troll]
Tomorrow it is saturday! FUN FUN FUN FUN!
You guys didn't get your Eames chair when you first registered with Apartment Therapy? It comes in the mail, along with a midcentury sofa . . .
I think all of the furniture in my apartment collectively cost less than an Eames chair.
Loving the comments on this :)
I actually find Eames chairs very attractive, I'm just really tired of looking at them. I love you so much, AT, but take it easy on the Eames!
@Bennemans: If I had a fireplace, I'd hang my 42" plasma TV above it... without a TV cover! *gasp* :)
Full disclosure: I don't actually have an Eames chair. I just don't see why everyone feels like they have to complain about them.
That's quite amazing how many comments here repeat exactly what I was thinking when I saw this post!! :D I didn't even know what eames chairs are before I got on AT... it's funny how sometimes people make snobby fun of "easily recognizable" ikea pieces, but somehow when eames or other "famous" pieces jump from every other apt that's original and ok. I guess if ikea was that expensive it would be ok as well ;-)
oh, and personally I don't like these chairs. I also don't like the S chair and other hot stars. I guess I have no taste...
If I see one more piece of Eames, 20th century modern, or Scandinavian furniture I’m going to shoot myself :)
Oh… you can also add “Hollywood regency”
I have considered purchasing two rockers for my living room but finally saw them in person and thought they were quite child-like as far as size.
As for the owners, do you find the seat comfortable for regularly-sized adults? I really want to buy the chairs and wonder if they would appear regularly sized in my living room as opposed to the high ceiling space at room and board.
I'm not a huge fan... I appreciate them coming in a range of colors, but I think I'd like a clear one the most (don't know if an authorized version comes that way). With the wooden dowels. You know, IF I MUST. XD
(The "eiffel tower" bases worry me because I wander around my home barefoot and will probably manage to injure a toe on those.)
I wanted an Eames chair when I first joined AT, then like so many others, I realized they're everywhere (at least on AT) like the 'Keep Calm and Carry On' posters. I still like them both, but I'm convinced I can find something less trendy for my space.
The green rocker in the twins nursery is still really cute though.
"Put an Eames chair in it" is now the new "put a bird on it".
Eames chairs are popular because they are a great and basic design, and extremely comfortable. We have an original fiberglass shell chair in our living room that is upholstered in purple vinyl... so awesome. They are expensive if you buy one new but you can often see a gently used one on Craigslist for sometimes an amazing deal, that's why we have a management chair, also purple but not vinyl. But yes, they are quite popular in the homes of these, but as the last post said, "put a bird on it", or recently an owl, or hang a "Keep calm carry on" or whatever else people commonly have.
ALSO.... Let's not forget that the Eames designed most of their furniture in or around the 40s, most of it is meant to be practical, comfortable, and hold up really well over time... Unlike the disposable replicas you can find online. So I wouldn't really call them trendy, more like iconic.
Wow, apparently my entire elementary school lunchroom was stocked with these golden nuggets. Don't get them either.
I don't like when people feel they have to explain why I should like a chair that I don't like. No matter what I hear, it doesn't erase the memories of seeing these ubiquitous chairs at Greyhound Bus terminals, doctors' offices, school lunchrooms, the unemployment office, DMV, and other institutional locations. Good for you if you like your chair, and even better if you found it on the curb, or at a yard sale for a dollar.
In defense of Eames chairs. Charles and Rae Eames were Modern masters, I am told that they built the prototypes of these chairs in their spare bedroom, how great is that? To me they represent the spirit and optimism of the modernist era and I am proud to have a piece of their genius in my home. Plus I think the shape of the armchairs is beautiful and sensual and they are quite comfortable. Just because something is ubiquitous, and really what percentage of homes has them, doesn't make them bad. It's like saying "if I see another iPod I am just going to die." Please visit the iconic Eames Case Study House in Pacific Palisades and the Eames Office in Santa Monica to get an idea of their amazing legacy in architecture and design.
Sorry it's Ray Eames not, Rae.
Come on, AT... I love your blog, but you guys just stuck in time, it's time to move on! I get it, you looove your mid-century modern stuff and hate tv's. There wasn't a single post that would not have at least something mcm, making the rest of us, who don't have such a specific bond with eames and mcm, feeling hopelessly behind the trends.
Slat bench coffee table, starburst clock, eames chair or lounge, and of course, some sort of mcm sofa. Oh, danish mcm stuff too - and you one of the popular kids.
We recently scored a vintage orange armchair rocker (along with a pair of Diamond chairs). I love it…….it makes me smile. My wife was not as smitten, but is warming up.
Fits in small spaces and adds a bit of form to any setting. Also very durable.
Looking at it now as I type on my Windows based machine (just trying to break a stereotype)!
Have all of you seen POWERS OF TEN, the iconic Eames film made for IBM?
I have a question: what are the differences between real and fake...
I am remodeling my kitchen and I was thinking a light wood table with a few Eiffel chairs. But I can get fakes for $90. I`m not interested in paying $250+ for kitchen chairs but I wanted something white to go with the walnut cabinets and white counter. I figured it would look modern and airy.
So ya, what is the difference...
Seeing so many Eames chairs is nowhere as tiresome as seeing all the sniveling about it...as if any of these people would have the gall to do it to anyone's face.
i don't own an eames chair but i sat in them for the first 18 years of my life every time i went to the cafeteria in public school : )
@sunnydark
Depends on how the knockoff is made, but IMO the real difference is that no one gets upset at you when you buy the genuine article. Except for you, and your wallet. :p
