Name: Randi
Location: Brooklyn Heights
Size & Type: 410 sq-ft. Studio
Favorite resource: Atlantic Avenue antique shops; downtown Brooklyn for fabric; Jonathan Adler for accessories; ABC Carpet sales for rugs; my parents' house.
Pitch: When I moved from a 1200-sq ft. loft to my one-room studio, I thought I'd be stifled. In fact, it's been a great exercise in editing--I really only keep and display what I love. As a renter who can't paint, I wanted to use quite a few strong colors in tandem without overpowering the space...

Pitch Cont'd: I was thrilled that I was able to keep
my queen-sized bed completely exposed and not at all bed-like (I work
from home), which I've done by storing my comforter and pillows during the day and eliminating any bedroom-looking furniture from the room.

Your favorite element: The mid century Danish teak sideboard, dining table, and caned chairs I inherited from my parents and all of the original artwork painted by family and friends.

Shaw's Original Fir...
I like your apartment Randy. You have made excellent use of the space, given the very small square footage. I looks like a real home and lived in. Love your artwork.
At first look it appears cluttered, but going over the photos again, I feel like in person it would be easy to walk through this space and take in everything.
What is that large piece of art on the left edge of the first photo?
I love how all your furniture just works together, even though it's from different periods, different styles, and all different wood colors.
Ha! I thought your dog was a pillow, I just now realized that was a face!
Great layout, but like you said without being able to paint your kind of limited to the amount of color you can incorporate. I really like the acrylic tables.
Your place looks great! What a little cutie pie on the couch!
May I ask where you purchased the high dresser?
You have done a brilliant job using your space. I like the look of your place - I feel like I could come in and sit down and be at home. Lovely.
I love, love, love your place! It's definitely what I'm striving for in my own space. I definitely agree with Anusha73... it looks like a real home that's been lived in. Great job :) Can I move in?
The layout is fantastic! And the decoration is edited, but not too sparse. I like to see evidence of life in a home.
I love your space! What first caught my eye were the pops of color throughout your apartment. I also love your artwork and how comfy and warm it appears. Wish there were additional pictures of the kitchen and bathroom. Great space thanks for sharing!!
so warm and inviting and i see what you mean - your bed and sleeping area are un-bed(room)-like. i admire your clear yet subtle separate zones. great use of space and filling the space without jam-packing it.
i just went through a very similar experience: downsizing from a 1000 sq ft one bedroom to a 335 sq ft studio - the editing, donating and dumping were cathartic and i have no regrets. you appear to be fully edited - i still have 3 boxes to get rid of. similarly, i refused to part with a queen size bed. i also have the same cutie-patutie dog as you. coincidences coincidences...
I really like that storage bench you have by the entry. Where is it from?
Very nice and comfortable space!
Your note says you work from home. Where's your "office"?
I like your layout; your place looks very comfortable and efficient. Not as dramatic as some of the other entries, but fortunately we don't all require drama in our lives. Nice style without looking "styled". Great that you have so many things that are very personal (inherited furniture and friend's original artwork). Kudos on a job well done!
i love your apartment! i love the colors, the artwork, the layout...
I really like the way you've hung your art. Most people hang it too high.
Happy to see aerial views! It really helps give a sense of the entire space, or at least an entire room.
This is brilliant! It feels so easy and lived-in, even as it is terribly stylish--I think most entries can't quite find the balance. I lived in a similar space to yours last year and now I am jealous I could not be as creative. Anyway, Insta-finalist for sure. :)
Beautiful! Your apartment looks very soothing, and seems to have great light. I especially love your artwork, the credenza, and the cute little coffee table.
I love the mishmash of mismatching furniture and accessories. They work together really well. I think you have TOO much furniture but it's laid out well and doesn't make your space feel too cluttered. Your color scheme makes the space feel warm and cozy. The coffee table is unexpected but ties the end tables to the rest of the room perfectly. Awesome.
It feels like a lot of pieces and big things. But the one thing that just stood otu to me is the clear side table. It disappears. Great small space tip. But overall, it looks like a really comfortable space to inhabit...which is nice to see when so many of these small places are Ikea-inspired "showrooms". kudos!
Thank you so much for all of the positive response! I've worked really hard to create a space that totally represents my personality and style. I was so nervous to see my place up here but it's wonderful to get feedback. Here are some answers:
Melanie--The large artwork was a commission by my friend Jennifer Dunlap. www.funlap.com. It's actually a 3-D piece of art that incorporates paint, yarn and surprisingly, bubble wrap. Although the apt looks kind of cluttered in the pics, it's really not in person. There is ample room to walk around every piece of furniture.
BklynTee--The high dresser is an old piece from Ikea. It has already made it through 3 moves...pretty impressive. The bench to the left of the mirror is also Ikea from the same time--maybe 4 years ago. It's great storage.
EIF--I would have loved to post additional pics, but thought the limit of 3 was best served with the views here. You'll see the bathroom and kitchen if I make it to the next round!
Andrea5280--I'm a freelance writer. I have everything I need stored in the sideboard, and I work from my table with my laptop. I can't work around clutter, so I love looking out of my window while I work without being surrounded by office "stuff." It might sound unrealistic to some, but I've become a purger at this point in my life; I get rid of everything I don't need.
Velvetseas--The acrylic nesting tables were a major find on overstock.com. I think they were $120 and are super practical.
Randi--I always worry that I have too much furniture and stuff in my living room (which is the living/dining room and office, with ahem, 2 desks), but you showed me that it can be done and still look great. Love your place!
I'm a huge, huge fan of mixed-and-matched furniture, but for some reason, the mixed SCALE of furniture is throwing me off (see coffee table, TV, etc.). I think maybe the same furniture, but a different arrangement? It looks a little cluttered as-is for the size of the space.
But you have some amazing pieces! Great little details. I love that the artwork is all done by people you know and not mass-produced prints.
Randi has great personal style and fashion sense. She exudes that in her living space as well. Her apartment is also great for lazy Sundays and Back to the Future marathons!
Your art really makes the place! such a warm and cozy home. Great job Randi. You have great taste and class.. it shows.
I really like how you've delineated the space. This looks very comfortable and uncluttered. Marvelous job!
I absolutely love this for its natural lack of fuss. The muted palette is perfect, but doesn't scream 'designer'. And great use of space as well - it doesn't feel small at all. Congratulations.
I LOVE the tiny little coffee table - it makes the space more cozy, I think. Where is it from?
i love how you've mangaed to squeeze in 3 separate areas into one very small living space w/o it feeling cluttered. you have a lot going on but it works- i think the placement of your art and mirror really work- as well as deciding not to have anything above the televsion. all of the colors and textures help to keep the eye moving as well- i think that somehow enlarges your space.
As a bit of a pack rat myself, I envy your ability to minimize while still creating a brilliant space with very cool touches. I should take a few hints from you!
i love this!
it is good design but it looks like the average apartment therapy-er can do themselves without going into debt.
Snazzy! Where's that sofa from?
I love this kind of apartment. Very warm, inviting, lived in and unpretentious.
im interested to see the kitchen and bathroom :)
i love your decor
Your small cool is my favorite so far. Every piece looks so thoughtfully cared for, arranged, and still very hip. Is that a plexi-glass tray over the stool as a coffee table? I've always wanted to do something like that.
hi again.
a few answers:
the "coffee table" is actually a footstool that I found at a little store on Smith St. Since there is not much room for an actual coffee table, this works perfectly. There's just a piece of glass on top.
my couch is from jennifer convertibles. i know the store is an interesting topic for debate on AT, and i'll say that while it was bought purely for economical reasons (I wanted a pull-out for guests and it was a really good deal) it's actually not been so bad. It's really comfortable and it's a perfect size. It is certainly not what I would choose if I had more to spend, but c'est la vie.
Clean comfy pup = super.
It looks very warm and inviting.
Great layout. Looks cozy without being claustrophobic. You really overcame the no-painting handicap with your art choices. My only problem is that couch. It just doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the room.
great work Randi -makin the most of small space and limited budget.
I really like this...I like how you blended furniture from different eras but it doesn't feel "random". I like the use of colour. Tons of storage, enough pieces on display...feels lived in. I like the lay out. Love the Adler pillows. Well done.
Although I don't see anything "innovative" (is that part of the contest details???) my vote (if it was still open) would be Stellar! Insta-Finalist!. Really like this, one of my favourites so far.
k*
I missed the vote but I like this apartment a lot.
What a great space
