There are some places we only clean a few times a year and then there are places that, somehow, often never get cleaned. They just don't seem to need it...but they do. Now, we're not suggesting you go all OCD but you might want to add a few of these to your annual, or semi-annual, clean up.
- Space Underneath Appliances or Keyboards: most of us just wipe down the counter or the desktop without actually moving this stuff and then you do and you discover that underneath that appliance are a ton of crumbs. While you're at it you might want to take a sponge to the bottom of your appliances too before the dust turns sticky.
- Dishwasher: it gets clean when you run it, right? Uh, not so much. Small bits of food may get stuck in crevices and around the door's rubber gasket. A toothbrush can help you dislodge them; running the dishwasher on hot, empty except for a cup of vinegar or tang can help remove greasy grime, sanitize and remove any musty odours.
- Walls: we spend a lot of time cleaning our floors but most of us never clean our walls, except maybe the tile in the bathroom. But they get dirty especially if, like us, you have a window or two that faces out to the street. Going at 'em with the occasional feather duster should do the trick for most of the walls in your home but if you use spray products in the bathroom, you might want to wipe down the walls around your mirror where the excess lands.
- Ceiling: see above. dust accumulates here as well as walls or floors. a swipe with a feather duster should do the trick if you take care of it regularly. Drop a feather duster into your vacuum's long extension tube so you can reach your ceiling.
- Curtains: Go over them with the brush attachment on your vacuum and, once a year, it's a good idea to take them down and have them cleaned.
- Washing Machine and Dryer: like your dishwasher, this needs to be cleaned every so often. Wipe it down with a spray cleaner, fill it with hot water to which you've added a cup of lemon juice (for rust), white vinegar (for odors) or bleach (for stains) and run it through a full cycle.
- Vacuum Cleaner: a little tlc after you use it will make it work even better. Clean the attachments in warm soapy water, comb out the brushes (we have to cut off the hair that gets entangled in ours), wipe down the exterior and the cord with a soft cloth. And, if you can, take it in for maintenance every once in a while.
- Box Spring: we change the sheets but neglect the box spring. vacuum it regularly.
- Garbage Can: wash it down with soapy water and, when it's dry, sprinkle a little baking soda in the bottom to absorb odours.
- Flush Handle on the Toilet Bowl: wipe this down with a little spray cleaner
- Knife Block: we almost never clean this but the other day we noticed that it was a little sticky from being in the kitchen. a little warm soapy water should do it. same with that big jar that catches all your kitchen tools.
- Anything Hung Up in Frames: dust these or clean them with a little spray.
- Areas Under the Bathroom or Kitchen Sink: along with being a mess of sponges, cleaners and rags, this almost never gets cleaned out. Spend a few minutes cleaning and organizing it.
- Exterior Light: a little bird recently made her nest in ours. while we don't want to disturb her, when she leaves we'll give this a good dusting. Yeah, this is probably the maintenance man's work but he definitely misses it.

I realized I'm going to have to clean my walls soon because of my large dogs. There is a dingy area in a corner where one sleeps at night.
Another place that I need to work on is the inside of my kitchen cabinets. They look a little dusty.
Good reminders!
Another place is underneath large pieces of furniture - It's amazing how much dust and crap can accumulate beneath sofas, beds and dressers...
"we're not suggesting you go all OCD"
Well good, I'm glad to know that you're not suggesting that we go out and pick up an anxiety producing mental disorder. Eesh.. consider a bit more thoughtful term next time maybe?
i just moved my fridge and stove out last night from against the wall...i had to clean the sides and underneath. gross!
Wow! I thought my to do list was finished! Boy, was I wrong! Thanks for the info, I will make sure to clean these areas, as I have bad allergies! I hate to think of all the dust bunnies lurking in these places, but better gone then here!
In the middle of packing for a move last year (i.e. major procrastination time) I took apart and *detailed* my vacuum cleaner - was using q-tips to get in the inner nooks and crannies. Even found a loose bolt that had been jangling around for years. It needed it, just probably not at that moment.
The insides of lampshades tend to accumulate quite a bit of dust too!
My vacuum cleaner worked so much better after I cleaned it. Totally worth it.
I'll add the handles or the sides of the fridge/freezer where you pull to open. That is some serious nastiness.
This is the kind of stuff I get distracted with when I should be doing something else. That is the only time it ever happens.
Helpful tips, but sometimes all the recommendations (from everyone, not just you, AT) get a bit overwhelming. Like, if someone filled a calendar with all the stuff you're supposed to do in the span of a year (check the smoke alarms each month, exercise 5 days a week, flip the mattress twice yearly, trim the dog's toenails weekly), would there be any time left?
While you're cleaning the walls, go over your molding and outlet plates.
who has a "maintenance man" ?
"Drop a feather duster into your vacuum's long extension tube so you can reach your ceiling."
That is the best suggestion I've heard! I can't believe I never thought of it. I have 12-foot timber ceilings and I can never figure out how to get up there to dust them down. Thank you AT for this great tip!
Call me disgusting, but being reminded of somewhere I'm not cleaning is not appreciated :D
Don't forget DOORS - anywhere you touch with your hands such as face plates where you might push a door shut, fridge doors, bathroom cabinets, door handles, cabinet handles etc! Door frames too - anywhere you lean against!
While I agree with you, Ifmyheartwasahouse, I also think a lot of these things can easily be added in to your cleaning regime without being huge time-sucks.
For instance, maybe once every 4-6 months, you flip the mattress when you change the sheets. Unless you've got your bed shoved in a tight space, it's not that difficult to do. Other things are even easier to add in: vacuuming the carpets can easily have an air vent cover plate vacuuming added in with only a minute or two extra.
Some of these things aren't every-time-you-clean requirements, but they make a difference if you tackle them even once every month or two (like washing doors and door knobs). And it's easy enough to decide to focus more on the kitchen one time and more on the bathroom the next, to ensure that everything gets cleaned with some regularity. It doesn't have to be anal-retentive to be effective.
i think the occasional ocd cleaning is a good thing.
I do have OCD, thanks for mocking me and other sufferers.
Perhaps you should save up your cleaning tips and post them in one place, an editable post where you add more when they occur to you - a 'where you should clean but often forget to' page linked from the main page - as these cleaning posts feel like you're nagging us due to their frequency.
Is cleaning the flush handle on the toilet bowl something people rarely do? That's so disgusting! I wipe it down every time I clean the toilet(once or twice a week) I thought that was normal! And I wipe down my doors and door knobs every week as well... isn't that normal?
I have OCD, too, and I have no problem with this post. Get a thicker skin, wouldya?
@ carter76 -- maybe they've scrubbed one too many layers off...
Ugh..my walls are horrible. My landlord had an air duct person come in and clean the ducts...which resulted in big, smudges on the walls around all of the vents. I've tried cleaning them but the walls are painted in a matte paint and it doesn't wipe down well at all. I'm afraid my only option is to paint.
i've used a magic eraser on wall scuff marks with success - we had floating shelves up and they left a lot of marks! the beige matte paint wasn't damaged with the magic eraser...
@Aimsly -- Awesome!
@ifmyheartwasahouse -- Thank you for saying that out loud. I feel overwhelmed by all that, as well. From beauty tips to healthy food and cooking tips to housework tips to fashion tips to exercise and meditation tips -- I can't even begin to imagine how to do it all in one week, and do the laundry and recycling, too.
i recently cleaned the slats of all the blinds - disgusting.
also, cleaning the exhaust fan in the bathroom and fan hood in the kitchen yield a gross amount of dirt.
and absolutely all door knobs and cabinet handles.
i usually do this stuff when i'm on the phone
I'm with you, rapunzel. These posts always come across to me as "5 ways you suck," or "10 ways you've failed again." Rather than helpful, they just seem anxiety-inducing: no matter how hard you've worked, your house still isn't clean enough, and YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW YOU'VE FAILED! You need us to tell you! Stop what you're doing and CLEAN SOME MORE!
@dutch girl - I agree. Why wouldn't you clean the flush handle if you're cleaning the rest of the toilet?
I give up on the walls... I don't know what the deal is. They were filthy when we moved in. Some patches even look OILY. I don't even know. And other things like doors and cupboards get filthy SO FAST that I actually wonder if this place was even painted properly! What if this whole place just got a coat of primer? The mysteries!
My cleaning lady (who only comes every other week) pointed this one out to me: You know those little felt glider pad gizmos you put on the bottom of chair legs? I have them placed on the bottom of all four bar stools. Talk about dust magnets! I now de-fuzz these suckers every few days... Blech!
If you have textured ceilings, cleaning them every three months will dramatically cut down on the dust in your home. In each place I've lived that I've had them, I found this to be true. For me the best way was to use the bare floor attachment and vacuum them, but you could also sweep them with a regular broom. Do the ceilings before doing the rest of the cleaning or you'll have to redo everthing. It's amazing how much dust they will accumulate and hold.
Here's a gross one - I once had a dish drying rack (no dishwasher) with a plastic mat under it. For a few days I smelled something bad in the kitchen and couldn't figure out where it was coming from. I finally picked up the mat and found where the stick was coming from. There were little maggots wiggling around in stale water.
I now have a drying rack with legs, so I can always see under it.
As a chronic re-arranger of my living room, I can justify it when friends make fun because I end up doing a thorough cleaning of the floor, carpet, and under all pieces of furniture as soon as they are moved.
Hmmm...
Who rarely cleans their flush handle!?! Eeeesh!
(btw: "flush handle" is in the #10 spot... weren't there suppose to be just 8, as the title suggests?? there are 14 in this post!)
You could replace all these "my-goodness-you-don't-even-know-what-a-pig-you-are"-posts with these simple pointers:
A: Clean your ENTIRE house
B: If you don't have the time, hire a cleaning lady
C: If you can't afford a cleaning lady, learn to live with the fact your house CAN'T be perfect all the time
And now I'm off to dust the inside of my lightbulbs! Cheerio!
LOLNO.
XD
Don't forget the baseboards and ceiling fan. Get a dusting fluffy thing (too early for me to remember the name) with a long handle and just walk around your apartment for the baseboards.
