We just don't have it in us to venture out into the shopping madness of Black Friday. Since we're lucky enough to have the day off, we'd much rather spend it at home, enjoying leftovers and catching up with family and friends. If you don't yet have plans and you're thinking of staying in, we've gathered a few ideas.
- Ask your friends to bring their Thanksgiving leftovers over for a Black Friday potluck.
- Spend the day making gifts instead of buying them.
- Rent or download your favorite films and enjoy a movie marathon.
- Break out the Monopoly, Scrabble, or Trivial Pursuit board.
- Start planning those holiday party playlists.
- Destress from family time with a nice soak in the tub.
- Hunker down in the kitchen and make some holiday cookies.
- Read a book or magazine.
- Make yourself a Black Friday cocktail.
- Plant a one-pot winter herb garden in your kitchen.
- Burn off the Thanksgiving calories by exercising at home.
- Put up your holiday decor.
- Write your holiday cards and letters. Real, handwritten mail is so exciting to receive!
- Shop in your pantry and closet for things you can donate.
- Clean your bedroom and enjoy a good night's sleep.

Make a list of at least 10 things in your life that you are grateful for. I think almost everyone would benefit from ending each day recalling the positive, beautiful, good things that we have seen, or done or received. It helps get your priorities in order and offset the many negative things we have to deal with.
wow. thanks for the great ideas and comment! how inspiring... i've only shopped once on black friday and it was not at all worth any so called savings... i was exhausted the rest of the day and ended buying on impulse... no fun and i will never do that again... i've also decided this year to make it a totally handmade christmas... and whatever i can't make myself i am buying from other crafty people... so if i do shop on friday it will be online at etsy. enjoy the day!
According to the picture, I should be doing something involving chains and a daybed?
I will be catching up on my Mc Leod's Daughters series on Netflix addiction and making bread and planting flowers. Yeah to the beautiful simple things which I am grateful for.
Then I am going camping for a couple of days!!
happy thanksgiving!!
Not shopping is good for you and good for the planet! November 27 is "Buy Nothing Day." my preference rather than "Black "Friday." It always occurs day after Thanksgiving and originated about ten or so years ago.
Kalle Lasn, the creator of Adbusters, has some insightful thinking about consumerism and the state of our culture and souls.
How about sparing a thought for the poor store staff who can't have a decent night's sleep (following their Thanksgiving) and have to get up in the middle of the night to go to work so the their bosses can get more shoppers to spend more money. What is wrong with this picture????
who really goes shopping at 3, 4 or 5am other than online. How about shopping for items to donate to charity - help those who have to work black friday (mostly underemployed or 2nd income jobs) and help those not so "design within reach" (NB I laugh at DWR as most of their stock that everyone here drools over is not so DWR).
cleaning the pantry for donatable food items and the closets for unworn winter coats and suits to donate is also a good friday activity...
I want that daybed. Where is it from? Anyone know?!
"I want that daybed. Where is it from? Anyone know?!"
It's only available at Walmart at 3am Friday Morning, the Day after Thanksgiving.
One per customer, please...
...and if you are caught trampling the staff, your discount daybed will be taken away.
Work on a home improvement project. We replaced our carpet with bamboo floors this year. Maybe next year, we'll paint a room.
Come up with a term for the day other than "Black Friday."
