I love this idea! As soon as I saw the photo I had one of those "how did I live this long without knowing this!?" moments.
Real Simple has a collection of other, possibly-new-to-you uses for aluminum foil, an item that I'm fairly sure the majority of us has a roll of in the ktichen cabinet. The best little tips and tricks are the ones you can use in a pinch and on the fly, and these definitely apply.

Never even thought of using foil as a makeshift funnel. Genius!
we have two 6-month-old kittens, and we're using a sheet of foil to train them to stay off the kitchen counters -- they hop up, and it slips out from under them, or they hate the feel of it, and hop back down. success!
Perfect timing! I'm painting my apartment back to how it was when I moved in and next week I'll get to paint a new one!
But why not just take off the doorknob? It takes as much time to wrap it in foil as it does to unscrew the pin.
omg, taking off a doorknob is such a chore! Even one that hasn't been painted on over the years. I don't mind doing it if I have to, but I would much rather use foil. so much better than tape!
This may sound a bit strange but one of the best uses for Al foil is for burns! Run cold water over the burn then WRAP it in foil, shiney side towards the burn, It will feel good then hurt like hell then gradually feel better. It will keep you from getting a nasty scar; let me give you my own experience, I was trying to unstick a pan full of hot grease ( 450o) when my fingers slipped and I deep fried my thumb and index finger. After much howling cursing and ice I was seriously considering going to the ER when I remembered the foil trick. Being without insurance I wrapped my fingers in foil and sat down waiting to see what would develop. PAIN then oddly NO pain, I actually fell asleep. In the morning I unwrapped them to find.....nothing. All was well, not even a blister! I re-looked up foil/burns and lo, there were scores of similar stories. Wow. Look it up yourself then try it should you burn yourself, you will become a believer. Salut!
I'd imagine that the foil works on burns because it is acting like a heat sink - moving the excess heat away from your body and out into the room. Would have been good to know last year when I burned myself with a pot of boiled corned beef.
I use them to make gas burner bibs (like this). easy to clean:)
Don't forget taking tarnish off silver/other metals, with the help of a little baking soda and boiling water!
D'oh! I will never try to masking tape my doorknobs again! Good idea!
While the foil around the door knob is neat, it messes up the continuity of the brush pattern on the door. Ideally, the grain of the paint brush pattern should be up and down, To do that you need to remove the knob and rose (the round plate against the door). With the foil method (or taping the rose), you'll tend to run a circular pattern around the knob. For a good job, take the 5 minutes to take off the knob and rose.
I use it for my puppy as well. Line it on your couch and he stays off it. The noise I suspect.
Every night I hear him nudging the foil and after about 30 seconds, he goes to his doggy bed.
While I haven't seen it in years, my mother was a fan of a particularly stinky ointment called Foil that she used to treat burns.
I keep a box of heavy duty foil around and it's mostly to hack things. I sometimes hack a double boiler by making a ring or snake shape out of heavy duty foil and sitting a smaller saucepan or bowl inside a larger one. Does that make sense? Anyway, foil is great.
That's awesome but also scary... I would only try this if you're sure the burn is minor. If you feel no pain following a burn that could mean nerve damage, and you wouldn't want to mistake going into shock for normal falling asleep.
krikkit:: by all means, if the burn is black, or you see muscle or bones. it's an emergency. Or if the blistered area is large (larger than a handprint, or crosses over a major joint, like a wrist, ankle, or knee). But a blistered finger never killed anyone. Keep it clean, don't pop blisters, and tinfoil works! (p.s. I'm an ER nurse.)
