Name: Paula of Henry Road
Location: West Hollywood, CA
Type: 2 Bedroom owned
Why I use color: I can't imagine living without color. I live with color and work with color every day as a self-taught textile and accessories designer (Henry Road) and wouldn't have it any other way.
Color makes me smile and I love the mental challenge of making colors and my history (things I love and have picked up over the years) all work together. In this apartment, I challenged myself to paint the walls colors I had never used in previous homes without spending any money on new furniture. That turned into a great adventure into the world of dark yellow. In the morning with the sun streaming in, the whole living room which includes the dining area and kitchen glows gold welcoming a new day.

2 Good color tips:
1. When it comes to interior design, imitation is the greatest form of flattery -- a great way to start out is to find a room you like in a magazine/blog and copy the colors.
2. I find black and white (and shades thereof) balance color so that it doesn't become too much.
2 Good color resources:
1. We are surrounded by color. Its everywhere we look: magazines, other peoples homes, flowers, clothing, sunrise, sunset, ocean...
2. Nothing beats the paint chip wall in the local hardware store. And they very helpfully display them in color families so that the blue with green undertones is next to the greens and the blue with purple undertones is next to the purples etc.

White Enamel Flatwa...
I just love that first pic. I could just sit on your couch and hang all day... and do tell us more about that fab lamp.
What a great interesting, eclectic and grown up space. Love the sunny yellow.
Bright and alive!! Link to Henry Road doesn't work??
Darren: Link should be working fine now :)
I love your use of color. I love the red and yellow together, and the pink vases.
But your living room is too cluttered. Too many competing objects. That bold color and that terrific lamp need to not fade into the background so much by having to compete with so many things. I think you will have a very fine look if you edit a little.
Love the look! The colors are amazing - so bright and full of life!
it looks ok, but I don't like the southwest vibe this space has. The different reds clash and give me a 'no' feeling inside.
this is a fabulous space, so vibrant! it comes alive for me.
GREAT JOB! -- only suggestion is to add window treatments so soften the space, think about a sightly smaller plant, less clutter on the tables. Experiment with a area rug under the coffee table. Color is great and balanced. You have my vote.
I like it, though the second couch looks clashy to me with the deeper red one. Everything else is lovely and harmonius. (Perhaps the pinkish colour of the second couch can be blamed on the camera? I wonder how it would look with both couches the same lovely red?)
^^
"harmonious". Time for more coffee.
very nice, thank you. the pink/red/gold black n white and the big plant, artfully arranged interesting pix over the sofa. witty but not cutesy red chairs.
excellent light touch. very very chic and pulled together but not "designed" -- not easy to do. because it requires a real eye and independent good taste. num num.
p.s. pay no attention to the curtain police.
The couches don't work for me. I would want to see different fabric on the pair of red chairs. I do like the red as an accent color, especially on whatever that is handing from the ceiling. And the huge plants work really well.
Oh how I miss West Hollywood. This is so California it makes me smile.
Finally! Someone with "intellectual clutter". I love to see homes where there is evidence that people actually read and have collections. I love that lamp and the sofa pillows. For me, the warmth and fun of LA is nicely portrayed here.
I love the vibrancy of the colors and textures with the black and white (or is that the other way around...). My only personal thing is that I'd prefer either two sofas in the same deep red, or two that are completely different.
Nice entry.
I looked at your place again today, and feel even more strongly. I love the yellow walls and the pink vases and red chairs. But I feel as if some of your more beautiful pieces just get absolutely lost. I wish I could come over and edit the place. The first place to start is on the table in the living room. Lose all the stuff on the table except for the lamp and pull it front and center. You are not giving that fabulous lamp the treatment it deserves, it is a work of art in itself. I could go on and on, but I would bore you so I won't.
Fabulous!! my first time ever commenting- you pulled me out of lurker world!! :-)
I agree with Jackier re 'intellectual clutter'... This is clearly a place where you live surrounded by your treasures, not a showcase for a few pieces. Love love love it.
and somehow i love the two different coloured sofas too. wouldnt have thought it would work.
After checking this site out regularly for a month, I've finally decided to post.
My Vote=Insta-finalist!
I think the way that you've used colour in your home is very beautiful and tasteful - I love the first photo...it's as much modern as it is exotic and 'real'. It looks lived in, which I like.
The only negative for me are the two red chairs - they just don't work for me for some reason in the 2nd photo. There are comments about the pink and red sofa not matching but I love the way they look in the first photo...so I don't think that is what bothers me about the 2nd. I also think the dining table would look great in a dark, rich wood...and would tie in with the other dark accessories (pillow, picutre frames, vase etc.)...just a suggestion.
May I ask what shade of yellow that is on your walls??
Brilliant, I love it. I could move in tomorrow.
Hi everyone:
Thanks for all your feedback, comments and compliments.
The color on the wall is Behr Squash (290B-6)
Cheers, Paula
Love the room - looks lived in rather than a showroom. Lots of interesting pieces and pictures - especially love the lamp!!
One of my favourites so far!
Too busy for me. Couches don't work but like the artwork
since when do red, black, white, mauve, and yellow add up to attractive? this looks like a retarded 13 year old girl crapped all over your living room.
Can I just say how much I dislike reeds? Can people please stop sticking them in a vase and considering them decor?
I almost like what's happening here, there's just too much of it. It needs to be simplified. Also the black and white pillows are too busy for the room.
I love the 2 red chairs and the fabric on the seats. Did you reupholster them? If so, I'd loved to know about the fabric. I wonder though if the chairs would look better in your dining room with what looks like a cool chandelier.
you've used too many shades of red that don't go together. a mauve couch, an apple red couch and two FM red side chairs. i don't get it. there are a lot of unharmonious elements in this room. the chunky wood table is fighting with those spindley white patio chairs. and the wall color can't really be flattering to anyone. this is embarassing for someone in the design profession.
