This scale-textured ornament sparkles and shines perfectly for the holidays. Its metallic armored look is achieved with - wait for it - flat-headed metal thumbtacks...

We found the idea at Dollar Store Crafts. It's a thrifty, two-buck project for anyone who enjoys creating something that looks like a lot more than the sum of its parts.

I'm going to try it. Looks simple enough to do with my 9 year old.
Brilliant!
oh I love this one....... I'm definitely remembering this....
Styrofoam is not much to secure the thumbtacks. I'd probably wrap the ball in duct tape before pushing the tacks in.
Reminds me of the Beaded Christmas ornaments that we made from kits in the late 60's/early 70's - Long stickpins that we'd thread with sequins and brightly-colored beads and stick into styrofoam balls & cones making sparkly and glamourous Christmas Trees, 3D Snowflakes & Stars...
...alot like these:

bepsf, I used to make the same type of ornaments with my grandma when I was a kid. I was so excited when I found a bag of them in her basement a few years ago. They're the perfect addition to my tree.
My first thought was Yes! I'm going to make this... my second thought was Oh no! Those thumbtacks are going to fall out and my littlest one is going to try and eat them :(

Use large sequins and pushpins. same look and the pins don't fall out.
Clever!!
Wondeful!!
Thank you
Before seeing the foam ball, I guessed that it was using something like a racquetball. I think that might be better for holding in the tacks.
I'm not a big Christmas decorator, but might do this to make some decorative balls for display (those ones that retail for $30 each at places like Crate & Barrel)...
Great ideas :)
This is a great idea that I have not yet seen on the many diy ornament posts. I especially like that it is silver and reflective, which matches much of my tree this year. Also, I do love adding an ornament to a gift--a great added touch.
