It's not easy to live in 450 square feet. It's even harder to make such a small space look spacious and airy. Danish designer Nikolaj Eis manages to do both with aplomb at his apartment in Copenhagen.

To be fair, it helps a bit that this isn't his full time residence. Still, the home is replete with smart ideas and color pairings for those of us who do live year-round in smaller spaces (as well as for those of us who don't).

1. Well-placed color, including the fuschia shelving unit and yellow stool, enliven the apartment and tie it all together.
2. Clever tableaus throughout the space look good without being fussy. Here, Eis plays with scale, setting an oversize desk light over a Muji model of New York City.
3. A sculptural chair is artfully paired with a bright print. The unadorned windows let in plenty of sun and make the room look bigger.
4. Floor lamps, art hung at different levels, and a textured rug create a quietly quirky corner.
5. Sleek cabinets and a unique metal light fixture help define the elegant kitchen and dining area.
