One of the appeals of having a bit of land to go with the roof over your head, especially when you have kids, is the appeal of one day building a tree house. You see them on Craigslist all the time and wonder if the owners' kids have grown up or just grown tired of the monster structure that was once installed. These parents took a different route and built themselves a tree house they could one day claim as their own once their kids headed off to college.

Laurie and Peter Stubbs in Baltimore have two daughters. One is 9, the other 13. The chances of their daughters using a tree house for many, many years was slim so they made sure to build something they could use themselves one day.

They built themselves a fort like tree house with two platforms tall enough for an adult to stand underneath. The space allows the children to use it now (and Mom and Dad sometimes use it to entertain) and when the girls go to college it will be a lovely observation deck, or just a great place to catch up on some reading.
