If you live in an old building or a rental, you'll understand where we're coming from: our last apartment's bathroom opened up directly into the kitchen, as did our apartment before that... For anyone entertaining or on a date, this can be veeeerrrrry awkward. So how to help ease their discomfort?

We have a bathroom that opens into the dining room - horrible for entertaining!
It’s not awkward at all, especially if you use a bathrobe. My bathroom even has no active ventilation so it needs to be vented over the kitchen. It goes really quickly and is not awkward, either. I’ve seen worse things, like bathrooms without shower, and the shower cabin being IN the kitchen!
Rig the fan so it turns on with the light. It will give some auditory cover as well as vent out any noxious odors. :-)
Yes it's not an ideal situation.
But I visited my friend in Istanbul last year and her bed was right next to the toilet, just a little curtain separating the two (no door). And there was only one bed so we slept in the bed together, next to the toilet! Oh, and the shower was over the toilet, and the water would sometimes flow over near the bed. Lucky we're very good friends and rugged Aussies :)
