While you might not guess it from photos, Emma of The Marion House Book blog spent a long time living in a bedroom that she found too trendy and not quite right. After a few months of careful planning, she has lightened up and overhauled the space.

AT readers, other contributors, and I can sympathize with the struggle to put the bedroom first; for some reason, it's easy to divert your energy to other rooms.
I think it looks great in both photos, but Emma's transformed bedroom is almost unrecognizable. In addition to bringing in new bedding and accessories, she painted over the deep gray walls, switched out her four-poster bed frame, and repositioned the bed. The result is relaxed but refined — a look that Emma's blog proves she is adept at achieving.

very nice, good job!
On first glance I like both before and after pics. On second glance I wish there were no boxes under the bed or art work piles/leaned against the walls.
I prefer the before! Except I'd remove the boxes from under the bed.
Really like both before and after, but I'd hate to think those DwellStudio sheets are now relegated to some guest hall closet.
I guess when you have a fab room and fab taste, you can make it work with dark and dreamy or light and cheerful! I'd like to give you my contact info for the next time you decide to redecorate!
Prefer the before. Love the wall color.
I prefer the before. Though the green thing (kimono?) hanging on the radiator looks like a severe fire hazard.
Um, I'll take her sheets and her bed if she's done with them.
I prefer the before as well, but I think of the bedroom as the most personal room in the house in more ways than one. It's no place to be goofing around with popular trends that you don't actually like the look of.
looove that gray. have had a similar paint color chip taped up to my bedroom wall, behind my same (in white) bed for months. maybe this is a sign to commit already. and those sheets? yes please.
the after is quite beautiful and cozy too. really digging that orange/black/gray combo on the big pillows.
I like both the before and after, in different ways!
totally preferred the before. the after looks just as "trendy" except now it's "hippy boho chic" instead of "kinda mod"
I like both but darn, I agree with those who prefer the Before. I love how the colors in the accessories and bedding stand out against those gray walls. It seems like a very soothing place to relax or drift off to sleep.
And her practical yet feminine accessorizing of that garden stool may have finally made me a believer in that piece of furniture, which I have up til now considered the single most overused, pointless piece of furniture to be featured month after month in various print home design mags.
I can see wanting a change from the dark walls, but I wonder if she might change her current white walls to a very pale or tinted color, a very, very pale gold, for example....
I vastly prefer the After, it's stunning. It looks so relaxing and airy and I love all the textures.
the after is just as trendy as the before & the change is the definition of trendy. both are pretty
yes, the artwork leaned against the wall thing is becoming so old.
I love grey. I don't find it drab or depressing. Yes, I really do want grey walls. My bedroom is a slightly lighter shade of grey with white woodwork, I find it to be calming and a great backdrop to my art. Which I hang on a wall.
@Mr. Modtonic - I don't find grey drab either. I find it elegant, warm and comforting. I love the grey rooms in my house. I find cream, white, buff walls dull, depressing and really only work if your space gets tremendous natural light. In spaces where natural light isn't so great, I'd rather have a strong color I enjoy. It think it's far nuttier to attempt to overcompensate for grey weather/climates by trying to have this super light/bright space. Seems like it only highlights the disconnect rather than combats it. Also, I don't go nuts over natural light the way other people do.
I thought I liked the before until I saw the after! I love the warmth and textiles, and whites, AND FIREPLACE. It seems like a bedroom you'd never want to leave. The wooden bench is to die for. Great job!
I do love the gray paint in the first pic, but she wasn't feelin it in the bedroom and there's nothing wrong with that.
I would love a source on that large pillow (or pillow cover) with the orange/black/white/yellow design??
I hate artwork displayed on the floor. It's so staged and cheesy.
I'm with you, Modtomic. I think grey is going to be one of those things like black toilets that people will look back on and scratch their heads. Everyone needs to put down the West Elm catalogs and back away slowly.
Both bedrooms are lovely, each having their own gorgeous qualities - but who wants to stay stuck in a bedroom design that does not feel quite right? Like too tight pants, they may look fine, others might like them, but really you can't wait to get home and take them off. Brava Emma, the new room is airy and soft without being overly feminine. The mixture of textiles both heavy and light and rough wood pieces are dreamy. Well done.
You know, alexisclaire, it's the same room, the fireplace was there before, just not pictured in the photo, which shows a rather small amount of the room. Both rooms are rather successful visually, but it's great that she was able to realize what suits her personality.
Thanks for all your comments. I can totally appreciate that some people would like the before better than the after. It just wasn't my style. I feel more at home in the new bedroom.
Couple things!
-we still use the DwellStudio sheets. They work equally well in the new bedroom. The four poster bed was sold to one of my readers.
-the artwork is going up on the wall! We just haven't got around to putting it up yet. The room is still a work in progress.
@ alexisclaire - The large pillows are made from an old carpet I found in a vintage store. The carpet was pretty beaten up so I had it made into pillows. I did a post on it here:

Thanks again,
Emma
I love them both!! It just goes to show that no matter what colors you choose, you are going to make a beautiful space! Congrats!!
