Designer Nick Olsen shares his thoughts on a 500-foot studio apartment with House Beautiful and gives his best tips on how to make a small space both stylish and functional.
Seeing the apartment tour move through three dimensions is a helpful way to understand the spatial relationships between the objects there - each of which has several carefully considered functions. One great tip from the Olsen is to pay special attention to the scale of a space and to use precisely one oversized piece of furniture. You can also make nearly every surface multifunctional - from a coffee table high enough to eat at comfortably, to book storage on the seats of unused chairs.

Lovely, the color scheme and flowers are in beautiful shades, and the artwork is fun too. Would really like to know where some of the furniture is sourced! Anyone have ideas on where the coffee table is from?
I wish I had friends like that!!
I think this is great. It looks like an upscale hotel room, abet a FULL one.
Now if only he could come and redecorate my 295 sq. foot apartment...
That studio really is lovely and fun.
Nice! I like the fridge idea, looks fun& personal but not cluttered.
Yes, the photos covering the fridge were a great idea. I hadn't realized it was a fridge until he talked about it.
I am all for maximizing a small space. (I live in a VERY small 1 room apartment) but this is a bit too crowded and busy for me.
He's a skinny boy, but I can't imagine it is comfortable to have more than one person, or even one larger person in this space. Imagine all the knocked over vases, and shifted furniture.
Those walls are pretty close to the color I'm looking for (aka the new ikea catalogue cover) - would love to know what color that paint is!
Awesome! Thanks for the advice! :)
Well done and very impressive.
@Moxie my bedroom is painted a similar color, Behr's Valley Mist.
It's a 300-foot apt, not 500 like the article says. Cools space.
this is super pretty - love all the ideas, especially love all the art that ties it all together. but - i think it's way too much stuff in this space. i relate to having the perfect piece that ties many elements together, but this seems like too much. for me, anywho :)
Wow. That is amazing. I would never have thought to put kelly green with that wall color but it looks good.
I am obsessed with AT but really the lack of editing or proofreading is getting to me.
Nice Ideas. The whole look turned out very well.
I love those nesting tables!
