The expansiveness of lofts, while impressive and great for parties, can sometimes defy the laws of coziness that many of us appreciate about small spaces. This 'Cabin in a Loft' project by Katz Chiao, a design and research collaborative founded by Deborah Grossberg Katz and Terri Chiao, creates the best of both worlds — small architectural cabins within a larger loft space.
The raw wood “houses within houses” not only divide up the space in a unique way, but become beautiful sculptural objects. The hand-made, rustic quality they bring to the apartment in a former textile factory hearkens back to the days when loft living was more of a DIY adventure than high-end development. That's awesome!
I had a friend in Philadelphia who lived in a loft which had a (drywall) "house" built smack in the middle of the apartment It was angled such that it separated the four corners of his apartment into four different spaces The water pipes ran through the middle of the apartment, so the bathroom and kitchen were located in the mini-house, and the water papers were disguised as a 'chimney.' The kitchen had a 'picture window' looking out into the corner that was the living room space.
Everything was white, so it wasn't immediately apparent that this was intended as a house-in-an-apartment, until you took a step back and looked at it. Otherwise, it just came across as a funky (but fun, even without the house) floorplan.
oh my god, how cool is that !
chaos, your friend's sounds awesome too :D
