I just got my hands on a new photo of an old project, which got me thinking about trends, design and how ideas pulse in and out of consciousness.
Here, we have a chevron, or a flame stitch pattern. It extends as a design motif back to ancient Hindu temples, old Hopi Pottery, French Art Deco, hippie ponchos and on into the night. We've been using this in decorative painting for several years, and for some reason this summer it reached a tipping point. Chevrons were everywhere.
And I mean everywhere — on throw pillows, clutch purses, cell phone covers, and especially the loose summer dresses on every other woman walking down the street. I would have started taking cell phone pictures of all those different dresses just to prove my point, but I'd be writing this with a black eye.
Do I think the fad will fade? Sure, just like mutton chop sleeves and neon sweaters from the 80s faded. Oh, but look — everyone's wearing neon again. That aside, I do think good ideas and good design last more than a season. For example, I'm still mesmerized by Roman floor patterns and frescoes that were created 2000 years ago.
These are actually four sliding doors in front of an office, and the first thing you see when you open the front door. For this project we chose a base coat of Ralph Lauren Regent Metallic Silver Bell RM 45, and continued with a nice set of neutrals determined by the rest of the apartment — Benjamin Moore's French Beret 1610, Temptation 1609, Violet Pearl 1451, and Hampshire Rocks 1450.
I'm less-is-more in the color department when it comes to these things, and as with all those summer chevron dresses (Navy and White) I think it would start to get a little crazy with too many competing colors. And just when I thought I'd had enough, I looked at these photos again and thought, ooh — let's make another one…

I got sucked into the fad too. I have a vintage dress in a chevron print and the colors work well.
I recently did this on my wall, and succumbed to two fads, but I love it!

I'm guilty too but I don't care --- this is one trend I'll participate in now and keep on loving after the trendiness fades. I have a chevron dress and am getting chevron curtains for a bedroom. Love!
As for neon . . . maybe I'll catch that one next time around. Maybe.
Chevron is one trend I'm okay with staying round for a nice long while.
I think chevron is a winner because it is easy to mix (but less boring than stripes) and very easy for DIY : http://homeofbambou.blogspot.be/2012/11/patterns-week-chevron-isnt-dead-yet.html
I could care less if something is trendy or not, but this is one thing I can appreciate more in someone else's place. Too busy a design for everyday life in my house but I can see the appeal in some settings.
May, your wall looks amazing. Well done!
I like chevrons in certain places. These ones tend to be a bit too bold and stripey for my tastes, and the irregularity of the first one bothers me.
Did anyone else think that the chair in the first picture was a drunk martini glass? Just me? OK, I need some caffeine...
I went crazy for chevron AND neon this year.

incidentally my two favourite make-overs.
I'm of the mind that if you like something and it goes out of style who cares? If you like owls, chevrons or birch trees just go with what you like and not whether other people think it's passe and no longer "cool".
I'm having my bathroom done in cole & son 'woods' (birch trees) tomorrow. I couldn't care less if the trend is "old." if something makes you happy, Go For IT! chevrons are groovy. maybe in my other bathroom...
sherrme, I thought the same thing! lol
Tumbs up Stream 13!
Plus, not everybody is obsessed with home decor as we are. Lots of my friends don't even know the birch wallpaper. It reminds me of a post of the so talented Jenny Komenda about overexposure to design.

Ok, I know everyone is calling Chevron a trend. However, I truly think that it is a timeless pattern that deserves its day in the sun!
I think this trend has gotten totally out of control, but I do like it in small doses. It can be so fresh and graphic mixed with something textural and rough. I do like the wallpaper shown because its a bit irregular and unique...
I feel like Nancy from Revival Room is right....to a point. It's a pretty classic design that in moderation isn't going to look dated if you do it correctly.
And as far as trends go, its a pretty safe one...remember Toile?
Yes, it WAS a timeless pattern. Now that I've been deluged with it, it makes me cringe.
Chevrons: I can take 'em or leave 'em. I like ikat fabric a lot, even though you see it everywhere now. I've even started to succumb to garden stools, which initially drove me crazy, partly because they were so ubiquitous in House Beautiful and other design mags.
I have to say I don't own any of the above, but, then again, my decor budget is being sucked up by other purchases in the meantime...
These are not cheverons it more of a HOLY DISCONBOBULATION BATMAN! type of pattern.
Not for walls. I could see this on a car or garage door.
