A fireplace in a children's space doesn't have to be a liability. You can safely close and cover up a working fireplace. But don't hide it; flaunt it instead with this great idea.
Paint over it with chalkboard paint and turn it into the fanciest chalkboard around. The mantel is a great place to display toys and artwork. I like the look so much I'm thinking about putting in a mantel in our new playroom to get the look.
This colonial-era fireplace was decorated in a myriad of ways by Martha of the blog Nibs. Scroll through her display posts here to see the series.

Shaw's Original Fir...
I absolutely love all these chalk walls you've been posting for a while now! I know when my kid is of chalk age, I am definitely making this happen!
brillant! I'm not a big fan of the chalk boards/walls due to the dust and noise (!), but this is such a beautiful idea!
How beautiful! I love the desk, too.
