A Coconut Husk Birdhouse

Some relatives recently brought a dried coconut shell back from their travels: it had washed up with the tide and they thought it would make a great birdhouse. My father promptly went to work carving a small hole in its face and hollowing it out to make room for a bird to nest inside. The result is a cool, island-inspired birdhouse much like the one pictured above:

It makes such a naturally suitable birdhouse that we were sure this had been done by many others before. So we set out to see what we could turn up. The pic above shows a similar birdhouse, with the step-by-step laid out by Instructables. We think this would be a great way to use coconut shells if you purchase them for their milk and want a use for the outer layer when you're through. When dried the coconut shell will hold up to a bird's use and provide a happy house for some time to come.
