Project by: Austin Varner
Location: NY, NY
This project was a fun one because the client had a photo by a famous fashion photographer (pictured over the fireplace mantel) that she wanted the living room based of off. She said that she wanted lots of saturated color and for the apartment to be fun and playful. We chose a specific color palette for each room and committed to making each one very different, while maintaining a consistent feel throughout the apartment.
While this was a great apartment to work in, the biggest problem was the size of the living room. Between the very high ceilings and the square footage of the living room, it was a challenge to make this space feel cozy and user friendly. To do so, we made several smaller ares within this room: a TV area, an office area, a dining area, and even a reading area. This allows for my client and her children to enjoy the room together, while doing their own things.
Thanks, Austin!

The photo (the one above the mantel) is lovely. I'm really not into the wall color in the living room, though—it seems to mute out the color contrast in the room, maybe? I think it looks best in the photo of the reading chair, where there's a palette of natural, earthy, warms & warm off-whites, but it distresses me in the photo of the main seating area. Those saturated colors and the stone of the fireplace are going kind of muddy in front of that color, I think.
That kitchen is WOW wow WOW, especially for a New York City apartment!
