School nerds (like myself) will appreciate Stacie's nod to schoolhouse decor with the headboard she made for her daughter Violet's room. It adds a lot of character and hardly cost a cent.
The most expensive part of Stacie's project was the plywood that she painted with chalkboard paint. And the cute yardstick border - it cost her less than $5. She wrote up a tutorial for aging the yardsticks and putting it all together - find the link on her blog GingiberSnap.
If that blog name rings a bell it may be that you remember seeing it here on Ohdeedoh. Stacie is the creative force behind Gingiber where she sells prints, pillows and more for the modern nursery and she also shared Violet's nursery with us last year.
(p.s. I'll beat the commenters to the punch by adding that you may want to use dustless chalk for this project.)

This is absolutely darling and my son would love it. But all I can think of when I see this is all the chalk dust that would land in his bed, rub off on his pillows and drive me crazy. (So, yes, Carrie McBride did beat me to the punch ;)
Adorable, but as a former teacher, all I could think of was the chalk dust too!
And btw, dustless chalk is not dustless in my experience!
I'm thinking about the dust too! Cute idea but I know my children and I would regret this project within five minutes of installation.
Even with (sort of) dustless chalk the pillow cases would end up functioning as an eraser.
I have a chalkboard decal for my sons headboard and the chalk on the bedding is a nightmare!
I have made blackboards for many client' children, but never as a headboard for all the above reasons. Every room has that behind the door wall space with nothing on it. Do it there. The first few feet will be low enough for the youngest to draw on & as they grow, you have the upper part.
Hi! I am Stacie, the person who made this chalkboard headboard. We do use the low dust chalk and honestly don't have a ton of issues with it. But to each their own, right?
Thanks for featuring my DIY here, Carrie :)
Stacie dreams up the sweetest things! Even if you don't want to use it as a headboard, this is a great jumping off point for making a regular wall mounted chalk board!
As a regular chalkboard its very pretty, but agreed on the dust. Not to mention if your child has allergies or not, them breathing in chalk dust off their pillows all night is far from safe.
I LOVE this idea! It's so super cute and although some people are trashing it, I think it's amazing! If you don't like it, don't use it. I think the designer should get positive comments for thinking up such an innovative way to decorate a room. Plus the blog already addressed the chalk issue in the post. We all get that some people don't want to clean up chalk dust, but that is not the point of this post! Some people have nothing better to do than to belittle the work of others. Funny that on a website that is trying to promote innovative people that most of the comments seem to be tearing down the idea. Go Gingiber! Keep up the great and creative work and ignore the naysayers!
I love it! Absolutely love it! And it looks like Violet loves it, too!
chalk.dust. enough said.
If chalk dust is an issue for you, then simply don't do this project. It is merely one of many options for you to choose from in this DIY world. Someone put themselves out there to show you ONE possibility and it seems that no one is considering the work that went into it and disregarding it because of chalk dust. I think that this headboard is darling!! That "beloved" pillow is mega-presh too! Create on Gingiber, create on....
I really love the idea of staining the yardsticks.
I love that pillow collection! The yard stick chalkboard is adorable too--I'd use it behind the bedroom door...well done.
this is great but be aware that the chalk dust can get all over the bed... dunno if there is dust-free chalk... we made a diy chalkboard on the back of a bookcase/room divider for our son and standard sidewalk chalk gets dust all over the floor.
just saw amber's comment too.
