We've admired the look of textured wall treatments for a long time. Companies like modularArts and Inhabit have been selling modular wall paneling as an alternative to wallpaper, but from our experience, it's not an inexpensive application. Good thing someone's figured out how to get this look, on the cheap!
A writer at the StarTribune had been thinking about using a decorative wall treatment, but didn't want to spend a ton of money. By using some scrap pieces of MDF in 1/2" and 3/4" thicknesses and extra paint, he was able to replicate this modular wall treatment. He did it so well you almost can't tell the difference between the real deal and the DIY!

Looks great! Though I wonder about locating it in a bathroom.
How well do heat, moisture, and MDF mix? And cleaning seems difficult. My bathroom (and kitchen) get that kind of sticky dust that doesn't accumulate in other rooms. I'd hate to clean it off all those surfaces.

They used MDF because they had scrap pieces of it and it was really easy to cut. They also painted and caulked everything, but a different room probably would be better for maintenance issues. Read on the link above for more details about their experience.
I love this but I agree with akay - don't like the idea of it in a bathroom; it just seems like lots of nooks and crannies for germs. Maybe a living room?
I actually like their design better than the panels... but yeah, bathrooms are icky...
