My good friend Jeffrey has long been in the market for a headboard, but despite the occasional suggestion I’d forward along or the vintage find I’d tweet to him, he could never seem to commit. “Enough is enough,” I thought. So, I called Jeffrey up and told him I was coming over to solve this problem once and for all.
Jeffrey: I’m so excited, I’ve never had a headboard before.
Me: And you never will, because we are simply going to paint one on your wall!
I sent Jeffrey a couple of quick sketches as inspiration, and he loved the wrought iron look. He even wanted to keep the the black and white hand-drawn effect, which I thought was a great idea and even made the project that much more simple.
Using a yardstick, a level, some painters tape and a dish for the rounded corners, we measured and outlined the wrought iron bars with a pencil, traced over them with paint markers, then filled them in with black acrylic paint. The whole project was so easy and completed in about an hour over a couple of beers, some tasty grooves and a few laughs.
What do you think of Jeffrey’s transformation?

very good! I especially like the cat bubble!
I like it a lot. Even though, until I started reading heaps of US design blogs, I never knew you were even supposed to have a headboard. But it seems to be the must-have accessoire ever.
Funny.
I love this! I think the painted headboard and the bedside lamp really compliment each other, making the whole area look great.
Alianne, I don't have a headboard. And I much prefer it that way!
Love it!
very nice! bijou the cat looked skeptical at first but seems to love the final result!
LOVE IT! But I hope that you never decide to rearrange your room.
Love it. I too have used the super sophistacted tool of various dishes for tracing curves. Nice resoursefulness!
LOVE this!! and i can't wait to try this in my room! thanx!
I don't know. I just don't like fake things. I guess it's kind of in the cute category. It's done well, nice execution ... I just question the whole idea of it.
Carmella- SO cute! What fun! And Bijou approves!
...but what will you clip the handcuffs to?
;-)
bepsf,
lol. I wanted to paint them on too!
I'm not usually one for something like this but this looks GREAT! Love. It. :)
boys! I love this! well done.
Nice. Blik makes some headboard wall decals for those of us who can't do something permanent. http://www.whatisblik.com/shop/wrought-iron
This headboard treatment is a wonderful example of youthful imagination coupled with simple sophistication. Bravo gents!!
It wouldn't be my personal choice, but I like the idea of the painted headboard, especially since it would be pretty simple and painless to switch, or remove by just painting over it.
I'm planning to DIY an upholstered headboard for my bed this summer, so that we have something soft to lean against when we want to sit up in bed to read: http://www.peacelovemath.com/
Has anyone else made their own upholstered headboard?
like!
How fun! This made me smile =)
Oh my friend and I did this for his apartment last year! It was so fun! He also bought some old wall lights and a deers head and added the black detailing around those too to look like they were on wooden plaques. We then hung various large old empty frames and it was perfect!
Great!!
Great job!
Why?
