We thought we'd end the day with this photograph of a grouping of family photos hung above the family couch. This one is in Jennifer's home and is simple and lovely. What makes it work?
Jennifer of J Casa Homemade describes: They are candid shots - our girls with one another, alone, or with us - and we love the whimsy of it all. To do it, I simply printed the photos onto photo paper in black and white and made the grouping cohesive by framing them in different white frames we already had on hand. When hanging them I simply went by feel, and we love that we'll be able to add to it over time.
We love that this display is a reflection of family life - not formal or posed, just a family.

Love the little snow angels! Are all the frames Ikea?
The sofa needs some array of colorful pillows, it's a little drab right now.
How fun, love the grouping. I could not agree more with the reasons behind why it works. I just did something similar. I had black and white prints made of some snapshots, tore the edges, distressed some wood, and decoupaged the photos onto the wood. I love how it came out, and just like Jennifer said, I have room to add more later! http://www.craftsbyamanda.com/2011/02/decoupage-family-photo-plaques.html
I really like this, and think Jennifer's executed it really well. The decoupage one doesn't even come close.
Sameriah, without seeing the rest of the room, it's not really possible to comment on whether the sofa needs more color, and anyway, it's not the topic of the post, is it?
I agree with Sameriah. Looks kind of boring.
It "works" because it's safe, it's matchy-matchy -- the frames, the black-and-white images, the lamps, and sofa -- it all ties together; however, I disagree that there is some design law that says every frame has to match, etc.
There's nothing eyecatching. I don't think this picture really shows anything personal about this space.
Thanks for the inspiration! I'm still attempting to get off the ground with some photos in the family room (go figure because we have an amazing photographer), and I think this is the perfect place to start. Some of us are ready to burst out of the box and immediately show off a layered look, while others (like me) need time to layer things in. Thanks for the starting point!
I had good luck in my last apartment creating a cohesive wall display of pictures, art work and letters, etc. I used a very loose antique silver, black and white theme with materials I already had (including a abstract ikea cutout to fill in blank space). The bonus: I was also able to decorate around the ugly thermostat with a spare picture frame. The results were posted on my blog @ http://penandcygnet.blogspot.com/
The image isn't the greatest, but it will give the the gist.
I wouldn't call it "cattiness". This is a design blog. I think its perfectly appropriate to say whether or not you enjoy the design.
i think its lovely when people post their designs on this design blog. It gives the rest of us inspiration for design in our own lives. I don't really agree that its an open invitation for for criticism. Everybody is entitled to individual design taste; we don't all have to have the same style.
I love it and am saving this photo for future inspiration.
