It's come to be a common trait of our country's residential subdivisions, but we hate how so many homes have the garage as the focal point. That's why it's refreshing to see one taken over by a living space. Check this out:
While this appears to be a detached garage, such a conversion would probably be even easier given an attached one. We love how the garage doors are still incorporated into the decor with new color and pattern. And that final image in the gallery? That's the before... so this space started out pretty nice! See the rest of this wonderful conversion at Style at Home.

Love the colours and brightness! But... no windows?
Windows? Just open the door.
I'm in the slow process of converting our attached garage into a ceramics studio - thank you for some cute ideas!
I have heard of people renovating their garage and renting it as a suite. It would be interesting to see some conversions.
Way cool! Love the colors. Gorgeous.
this post makes my heart ache. I have a multifamily home and an attached 700 sqft garage that I wanted to convert into our living room, connect the garage to the house with steps to the basement and first floor, to make a triplex. The garage door would turn into french doors and two skylights would be on the roof. Cant do as per NYC code - we are overbuilt. So I sit and salivate at garage conversion pictures.
I love it! We have a detached garage that we hope to turn into a BBQ oasis of sorts. This makes me wonder if I should be shooting higher...
Agree with Ban Clothing: "It would be interesting to see some conversions" (in fact, I'd LOVE to see more!).
Also, banning clothing isn't a bad idea. I'm just sayin'.
I have a garage full of furniture that won't fit in the house--LIGHTBULB!
Garage-Schmarage: Please make yourself cozy in my three-sided *ahem* withdrawing room!
that is absolutely stunning! I'd love to know what the garage panels are made out of!
Wow, these are really lovely!
Not to rain on anyone's parade, but there are serious building and zoning code questions to consider when converting a garage. They were not built as habitable space, so air circulation, fire safety, and insulation are all different. I would hate to see someone invest in a conversion only to discover it is illegal and be forced to un-do all their lovely work!
Call your planning/building department before you invest time and dollars!
While I love the after, I thought the before looked pretty great!
Our garage is the live room for my husband's music studio. It's fully sound proofed and drywalled with track lighting and bamboo flooring. It's nice, but I miss the storage space.
My son lived in a garage when he was in college but it hadn't been converted into anything! He said at least he didn't have to go far to do his laundry...

We converted our garage into a music studio, too. It's beautiful & fully functional. But we bought a 8X14 Tuffy to put in all my gardening stuff and all my husband's construction supplies. We just had too much stuff to ignore!
This cracks me up - many of our neighbors here in Chicago use their garages as party rooms. Drive down the alley on a weekend and you'll see loads of people just hanging out, drinking beers and watching the game... in their garages. Alley party!
But isnt it wierd to just sit at the top of the drive way, everyone that drives by will look right in. Hmm... Id need to block it some how...sheer panels or something.
Very nice though!
Caseyness - still laughing...
Cocochic - I guess I didn't think it was a before and after, thought they were just showing two different examples.
In Honolulu, many people do use their garages when they have parties or on Univ of Hawaii football nites (we don't have basements and our houses are generally small, often with extended family living). There is a flatscreen, a big folding table and a fridge. But nothing permanent like this.
I've seen some people that appear to be renting a garage or carport, pretty sure it isn't code.
I would love to be able to turn a detached garage into a pseudo summer house. Something a bit lounge-y for entertaining. That would be super fun!
where is that striped pillow fabric from? something we can get stateside?
It is so refreshing to convert your garage into a more presentable one. Loved the concept, the decors and the furnishing, everything is just perfect. - Rigette of Charlotte Overhead Door
This is a gorgeous conversion. Very chic. I'm going to bookmark this article to share with our clients!
