At Apartment Therapy, we love the ingenuity and wow factor of a great hack. Here's a DIY from the charming new blog House in the Woods that literally made me gasp. This industrial chic pendant started out as something very different. Can you guess what it was?

It's the Tradig bowl from Ikea!
Instead of buying another pricey wire chandelier, Amy Geer used a can of spray paint and a lamp kit to turn her fruit bowl into the perfect pendant. And, she notes, since there are pre-existing holes for the cord, the project is a snap!
Bravo, Amy!

Shaw's Original Fir...
I guessed correctly!
Though never in a million years would I have come up with this idea. It's brilliant !!!
It's an IKEA bowl... right?
Just a heads up...that bowl is a lot heavier than it looks!
I was going to do this exact thing with the bowl for our living room, but the scale was wrong for the size of our room and it was really heavy for such a small bowl.
@yfrankenberries - yes, it says so right in the post.
Smart & pretty. But am I the only one that feels a little uneasy about the whole minimalist lampshade trend? I don't know how I feel about at looking directly into the filament of a incandescent bulb...
Nice repurposing. @alecm I guess you could use one of those soft bulbs maybe?
@ALECM - It doesn't bother me unless it's just the bare bulb and there's nothing at all around it. I mean, I'm not looking directly at the light. And it's not any different here than having the bulb in a glass pendant or a ball jar.
Aha! Clever. It looks so much better as a light fixture than a bowl anyway! :)
Meh. I feel like it would cast horrendous shadows.
I admire the creativity, but I don't get why you would put a cage around a bulb. Either you have a shade or you go bare (with a beautiful round incandescent bulb and a dimmer).
Brilliant! Love how it looks!
I would totally use an Edison bulb with this. Great idea!!
@PANCAKEFROMPELE agreed.
According to IKEA's website, the bowl weighs 4 lbs. Seems like most other fixtures would weigh that much or more (?)
I love the repurposing of IKEA items to turn into pendant lamps. Unfortunately a lot of them are too small in scale to use. Still hunting for one. This one is great however!
Slick! I have the same complaints people have made about this project for commercially made shades -- lots of them cast weird shadows, etc. It all depends on the implementation and when and how much you use it.
Lofe.it. The shadows would create an amazing effect in my tiny foyer.
*love*
I was going to guess "coat hangers," and don't tell me it didn't cross your mind.
That was up on a house blog about a year ago...
aw, I guessed huggable hangers. that would probably catch fire with an incandescent though. :-(
Very clever. Not my style, but it doesn't matter. It would be awful if we all wanted the same thing.
I guessed right. :D I thought, "A fruit bowl?"
We picked up a set of the white fruit baskets for ~$10 at Ikea about a year ago when they had the white color on clearance and turned them into light fixtures exactly like these in our house that we were preparing to sell.
Our agent was amazed that they were Ikea fruit baskets, and gave an interesting look to the appearance of the hallway with the shadows they cast. The buyer loved them (but we weren't about to tell him they were from Ikea)!
The Ikea Hemma cord can be assembled in between the two layers of basket (the ring attaches in between them) allowing the bulb to sit deeper in the fixture, which looks a lot better as well. If anyone is considering these, they look a lot better with a round (globe) style bulb in them than the candelabra shape. Clear bulbs will cast the best shadows if you're looking for a dramatic effect.
I have one of the white fruit baskets and after reading this post I am inspired to try this out. Thank you for all the information, great idea!!!
I've been thinking about doing this the first time I spotted these "bowls" at IKEA. Of course I never actually DID it...
that is so cute!
