A Green Search: The Best Indoor Bicycle Rack

One green decision we recently made (after much agonizing) was to downsize in the automobile department — from two cars to one (shared between two of us).

This means feet and bicycles have become our numero uno mode of transportation. It's been fun: We haven't biked this much since we were in the fifth grade.

But now we need a good indoor bike rack solution. We're on the hunt for one that keeps the bikes out of the way and looks good too ... Hey, we can dream can't we? We stumbled onto the Delta Michelangelo Two-Bike Gravity Stand ($59.99) and it looks promising.

We also like the idea of the Delta Monet 1 Bike Fold Rack ($34.99). Both look clean and functional.

Any indoor bike rack opinions out there?

There's one out there that I cannot find online right now that is plastic, circular, and wall-mounted that has holes so you can use a cable lock to lock your bike to it (it's a single bike rack). It's hollow so you can store stuff in the hole (like your bike helmet). No idea what it's called, though.

Not as pretty, but it was great to still have some floor space/storage space under the bikes. It's also pretty cheap. Plus they sell those pulley systems to store your bikes at ceiling level.

i like that the Delta Michelangelo Two-Bike Gravity Stand doesn't require you to drill into a wall (since i rent).

I have a Delta Michelangelo by the front door in my living room, and it's great. It was easy to install, and it's easy to access the bikes. My boyfriend and I ride everyday, so it sees a lot of use. My only complaint would be that the rubber coating on the hooks isn't very durable.

The gravity style (Delta, Sharper Inage, etc.) are good if you have two bikes - they only take the space of one - and don't want to damage your wall.

KristinaXI, you can mount to brick, you'll need masonry anchors (look like blue screws) and a masonry drill bit (use the size recommended on the anchor package. Hand tighten the screws, as brick/masonry is brittle.

I like this DIY option. I'm going to copy it in my new apartment. With the board painted the same color as the wall, it's practically invisible. It would cost all of about $30, and only take a half hour or so to build.

I think I'd also add another board below, where the wheels rest to prevent marking up the wall. Maybe add a few more hooks or pegs at that height to hang helmets, panniers, and such.

This looks exactly like what I've been looking for to store my bikes! Jen - I wonder if you could just throw some electrical tape or similar around the hooks to reinforce the rubber coating on them.

do you still want to get the handlebars out of the way.. do you bump into them? this is a simple solution to a VERY annoying problem..
