Time and time again I go back to The Selby to view stylist Charlotte Rust's New Zealand home. I can't get over the harsh concrete exterior and the unusual placement on a rooftop. It's stunning! And to imagine what friends must say when they come over and see her home for the first time…

Rather than grass, Charlotte has thick planks of wood in her front "yard". She even has an industrial ladder trailing up the side of her fantastic sanctuary. Tables are strewn throughout the front of her home, creating a gorgeous space for entertaining. I imagine she has fabulous views of Auckland from that high up.
What's most surprising is the interior. Bright, modern and airy with touches of vintage decor. It's a complete shock in comparison to the exterior and entirely magnificent! Sail on over to The Selby for more images of Charlotte Rust's home.

It must be cold in the winter and hot during summer!
OMG amazing!!
I've always thought having a house on a roof is amazing, but I never understood how difficult it is to get up there... How many flights of stairs do you have to walk?!
@hotpaprika Or hot in the winter and cool in the summer, since it's Southern Hemisphere.
Something like this would never fly in Toronto -- how did she get permits, etc?
Still, Charlotte has a beautiful home. She must be very proud of her very unique design.
I love this home, if you take out all the dead animal hides and bones. Love her living area, kitchen and closet.
I wonder for the sleeping loft, does it accumulate grime from cooking (think... top of kitchen cabinets even with venting).
I would hate to sleep above some of my experimental cooking, esp. that involving fish. ick.
She has a lovely space, but I have to say that her decorating style is ugly as all get out.
@magnetism Even if it's in the Southern Hemisphere it will still be cold during the Winter and hot during the Summer because they are, you know, not during the same months as in the Northern Hemisphere.
I can't.
hmm...I thought I was going to really like this. I think Id like it bare bones w/o her stuff in it.
Hmmm... I know that they have large crickets called Wetas, in New Zealand but, judging by the size of the hole in the middle of the leopard(?) pelt, they have pretty big moths too...
I also thought I'd like this more than I did... typically animal hides, antlers, and the like don't bother me. But seeing objects from a few endangered species (one type that I work with every day) made me mad. Seriously? You have an endangered species stuffed in your home. That's illegal here (up to $100K in fines and 5 years in prison), and just not conservation friendly.
Again, I typically don't mind seeing hides and antlers - but those are normally from animals whose populations are in no danger (when you have deer all over the city, it's hard for that to bother you since they don't have natural predators in the city). But if they can't recover? Really?
Venting over.
@magnetism: one can only hope you are joking.
Re temperatures: Auckland is semi tropical or the like, so not as much temperature swinging.
& remember, things like deer (& any other imported animal) are not native to nz & cause horrible harm to the natural plant & bird & reptile/insect life (only native mammals are bats), and so, in fact, it is best that they are killed (humanely, of course).
No fair.
I agree with ElectricKatie about the endanged species.
And I find myself wondering how she cares for all those animal pelts and stuffed animals. I live in a tropical climate and gave away some pelts from non-endangered species (with proper documentation) to my daughter-in-law because they started to deteriorate. I mean, you just don’t throw those things on a couch. They need proper care and conditions
Her home looks gorgeous ! Here in India, this kind of 'apartment' is very common. Almost all houses/bungalows have a spare room on the roof. These are let out at very low (!) rates. There is a separate entry for it. Almost all of us, as students or during our first/low paying jobs, have stayed in this type of accommodation. The terrace usually can be exclusively used, almost in all cases !
I like the arrangement of furniture, although I would remove more than half of their ornaments like all animals and ceramic figures.
However it has a great style and makes good use of waste materials. It must be cool being there with friends doing a barbecue and drinking cold beers.
I would like to see the bathroom. :)
Hoorah! NZ at last. Auckland is not semi-tropical. It rains there most days, and not in a tropical rainforest way. NZ has a climate similar to the UK.
I usually applaud everyone's individuality but this is the exception to all the rules! I mean that cheesy cheetah rug and the animal carcass/vertabrea on the window sill? I mean really? I remember using rabbits skins to decorate waaayy back in the 70's, after a while it just seemed tacky. You couldn't pay me to use them now!
And I prefer my animals alive.
Riti Roy's comment has reminded me of one of my favourite Satyajit Ray films, "The World of Apu". I love the little rooftop room in that film!
