What if I were to tell you that this simple wire shoe rack could become an edgy, cool light fixture? It's probably not the first DIY that would come to mind, and you might have a hard time visualizing it. But Elle and her boyfriend looked at this shelf, saw something beautiful, and figured out how to make it happen.

Didn't I tell you that it was cool? The geometric shape is interesting, but it's visually light, floating against the white backdrop of the ceiling. Modern, simple, and practical, this fixture will give off plenty of light, and you'd never know that it came from a common metal shelf that Elle and her boyfriend rescued from the garbage.

Elle said that they "used the shelf part, cut it in sections, and had our welder weld them together." This may not be an at-home DIY since it requires welding, but it still is pretty simple and affordable, especially compared to comparably sized light fixtures. And it shows the power of seeing common items with new eyes.

If you're inspired to make your own version, here's a shoe rack that's similar to the one Elle used.
