You asked for it and the Apartment Therapy community delivered. Friday's post on ABC World News' Made in America Challenge provoked a few of you to ask exactly where you could source domestic home goods:
Buying Made in America, much like the buy local movement, has lots of positive repercussions. On the heels of the recent state of the union address, we can note what an impact sticking to domestic products can have on our country's economy. Then there's also the energy and cost savings on the shipping of goods and materials.
Some of you, our wonderful readers, suggested a few sources within the comments of Friday's post. And we have a few of our own suggestions, too. We've gathered a list of sources together here. Please add to the list in the comments below!
Made in the USA:
FURNITURE
- most Crate & Barrel sofas
DECOR
APPLIANCES
- Lodge cast iron cookware
An interesting resource to check out for further information is Still Made in USA. The site breaks down what brands are simply assembled here and what products are actually made in the USA of domestic parts.

Good to know, thanks for this!
Remember all of the Homer Laughlin China Company's Fiesta line is still made in the US.
All of our picture frames are completely handmade in the USA and you can get immediate pricing quotes on custom sizes.

Bennington Pottery!
etsy! ...mostly
I believe Rejuvenation is all made in Portland.
<3 Bennington Pottery!
Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams; I believe most (if not all) of their furniture is made at their factory in North Carolina. http://www.mgbwhome.com/
For pottery, Louisville Stoneware, which has been made in Louisville for over 100 years. You can also personalize it: http://www.louisvillestoneware.com/
I would double check The Company Store. The down products may be made in the USA, but some of the blankets are made in China. You have to call or e-mail with a product number to confirm. I do this with every purchase. It doesn't add much more time, and if we all did it companies might actually have to start bringing jobs back.
The Woof & Poof pillow company, which distributes to retailers across the U.S. Everything is handmade in Chico, California.
For anybody looking for sustainably-built kitchen cabinets made in the Northeast, check out Purekitchen (http://purekitchen.com/)
Great resource list. I'm sure it goes without saying, but a lot of these resource carry items that are *mostly* made in the USA. I know that All Clad does have some pieces made in China (we just bought a griddle pan that was MIC), as does Room and Board. If it's important to you, be sure to check the origin of the individual item you want to buy.
we got our beautiful wooden industrial table from American Furnishings.

they have incredible stuff
I believe Club Furniture builds their pieces in North Carolina. They have a great selection of tasteful and reasonably priced couches and chairs.
There's lots more than this! Lots of furniture is made here, even at places like Value City Furniture. Just check the label! Also Nordicware makes pans, cookie sheets, etc here in the US and they're reasonably priced.
As for building materials, USG Drywall is made in NW Indiana, and other locations around the US. Shaw, Mohawk and Milliken carpet is made in the southern US, Sherwin-Williams paint is made on the South side of Chicago, and Pionite laminate as well as some Formica is American made.
When you're doing actual construction, it pays to call or email the manufacturer and just ask where items are sourced. Imported stuff, especially building materials, is awfully risky, because you don't know if there's lead, cadmium or other toxins in them. Plus, it's significantly greener to source materials from within 500 miles of your home, and buying American creates real, sustainable jobs.
For wall mounted frames, go to AC Moore. They have a line of inexpensive wall mount frames that are all wood and made in the usa

For wool blankets
Pure rest for eco friendly organic bedding, etc
Some of the lamp parts from Rejuvenation are made in China. I just got a bar light for my bath there, and the lampshades were marked "Made in China" For the price they charged for the shades, I was disappointed in this, since the same shades would have been a fraction of this at a local hardware store.
Consider buying from local artists and craftspeople who make furniture and accessories.
Thomas Moser furniture. Beautiful and pricey but worth it.

I second Nan on buying from local artisans.
Speaking of building materials: the fasteners, along with most items sold in the catalog at McMaster-Carr, are made in the USA, or were when I worked there. They also offer US-based, non-voicemail tree customer service and pay employees a livable wage.
About 65% of Ethan Allen's stuff is made in the US. It's made in either Vermont or N. Carolina with wood from the US, too.
Whittier Wood Products based in Eugene, OR has a variety of basic furniture. Much is made in Eugene of local alder and birch, some sourced in Vietnam. Ask about individual pieces. I have alder wood kitchen table and chairs, kitchen cart, computer desk from them and they have held up well for about 10 years.
I agree to seek out local craftspeople when you can. Not just for the local or made in USA reasons, although good. Each item from local artisans will be unique to your home.
I have 2 Room and Board sofas that are made in the US but unfortunately I didn't realize that my dining chairs ordered from R&B were made in China.

Lexington Furniture
Stanley Furniture
Bernhardt Furniture
Thomasville Upholstery (and some of their casegoods as well)
Sealy, Simmons, Beautyrest, Spring Air and McCroskey Mattresses
Anything by Herman Miller.
Modernica Furniture
Knoll Furniture & Textiles (US and Canada)

Just because something says it's made in the USA doesn't mean that its components are made here. A down comfortor might be made (assembled) in the USA, but the down might be imported from China and the fabric from India. Even a lot of locally made handicrafts (etsy stuff too) use imported pieces.
Here are some additions to the U.S. Manufacturers list:
Furniture
Baker, Henredon, Bernhardt, Councill Craftsmen, Drexel, EJ Victor, Hancock and Moore, Hickory Chair, Hickory-White, Irion Furniture, John Widdicomb, Karges, Kindel, Kittinger, Pompanoosic Mills, Sherril, Sligh.
Many manufacturers offer some pieces manufacturered abroad in whole or in part. Check the content or manufacturer's label for origin.

"Just because something says it's made in the USA doesn't mean that its components are made here. A down comfortor might be made (assembled) in the USA, but the down might be imported from China and the fabric from India."
That's why the tag would say "Made in the USA of Imported Fabric/Fill"
What if a U.S. manufacturer (i.e., "Made in America") buys some parts from foreign suppliers... with these ridiculous "buy American" clauses, they are forced to incur cost increases by purchasing from domestic suppliers, costs that are then passed on to the consumer. Plus, when we put barriers on free trade, other countries retaliate and we all pay higher prices. A complete worldwide free flow of goods and services is the only way to go.
Lee Industries make some furniture for Pottery Barn they are a USA company.
FYI- Knoll furniture and textiles are not all from the USA, most of their studio pieces are made in factories in Europe and a good majority of their textiles are from European Mills.

With the purchase of my new flat in Chicaago I've made a commitment to buy American whenever possible. It takes a little extra work, of course, but it's not difficult.
From Room and Board for furniture to Libman brooms to Calphalon cookware made in Toledo.
Glad to see this becoming an emphasis again - because the new Made in the USA products are really good quality. Best of all, they keep our neighbors employed.
Here's a link to my first story about the endeavor: http://urbaninfill.wordpress.com/2011/01/02/made-in-the-usa-an-overlooked-option/
A correction: Stanley Furniture is no longer made in the USA. All of its case goods are now outsourced (as of last year).
However, all products from the company's infant and youth brand, Young America (www.youngamerica.com), are made in Robbinsville, NC.

Century Furniture is not all made in the USA. Their case goods (tables, chairs, other all-wood furniture) is made in China. Their upholstery department is still in Hickory, NC. We went to their annual sale when we bought our house, hoping to get some Made in the USA furniture that was high quality. We were disappointed to find Made in China on a lot of the boxes. When we asked one of the senior employees, who is a friend of the family, they said that they have quality-control employees from the US in China to oversee operations.
San Diego Urban Timber creates custom furniture using locally-harvested trees from the San Diego area. They pretty much harvest, mill, and dry the lumber themselves. They built their own solar kiln to dry the lumber without using electric or gas oven kilns.
Check them out at http://www.sdurbantimber.com/
Their work is of phenominal quality and understated beauty.
When you can't get a USA product, I default to Europe. I just got a Magimix food processor and love it! At least it is made in France and is a product that will last 20 years - a rarity these days.
Pyrex glassware & Corelle dinnerware are USA made.
Libbey glassware is made in Ohio.
Nalgene (bottles, etc.)

Wright Table Company furniture, made in Burke County, North Carolina since 1971. Full disclosure, we import two chairs from Honduras which are finished in North Carolina.
