Orange was big a few years ago, then it died away for a while, and now we've seen it returning as a popular accent. Orange sheets, couches, and trim have all appeared recently on Apartment Therapy and it's reappearing as an upholstery option at chain stores like West Elm and CB2.
We love seeing it again, especially as a way to introduce some bold color into the mostly-neutral spaces that have dominated for the past couple of years. What do you think? Is orange making a comeback? Do you prefer it in small doses or do you think it could return as a popular wall color too?

I decide I want Purple, and it's "last year's color".
I switch to Navy Blue, and it's also impossible to find - then after I've settled for the ubiquitous Expresso, it's then available.
Color Trends = Ugh.
according to CB2 it is, but i'd prefer Red.
Not sure about on a wall but as a pop color it's tops. It's just permeated my life, thanks to AT. It's a color I've ignored my entire life but suddenly I find it rich and pleasing.
I love pops of orange. Especially with greys, whites and blacks. We have quite a bit of orange through our house, and I didn't even realise til recently how much it is a colour I use for little things.
Not so keen on walls and sheets that are orange.
bepsf: an expresso is a cheap mcdonald's coffee
To make a comeback, doesn't one have to have gone away at some point?
"Don't call it a comeback!" ORANGE is whats up! It's everywhere. Look around...
went away? accent?
y'all would HATE my house!!!
:-)
Loving orange as a pop of color - have many inspiration photos saved with that in common. And " hnhkt" don't make me say it, "Espresso is a Rich Italian drink"!
Oh, I think I get it, EXpresso instead of ESpresso right?
Orange you glad it made a "comeback"?! I've got orange leather sofa and chairs that won't be disappearing for many years...LoL
What patrick (the other one) said.
Word, patrick (the other one).
I love orange as an accent color. I painted the walls of my living room a muted orange. The fact that is muted makes it easy to live with. But for accessories, I prefer a true orange.
Much like Sexy, Orange never went away
If it's not...it should!
i have too much on hand to notice any trends
I really like your home. I have some orange... but I have red, as well... so the orange is softened a bit. I don't much care for one bold color or one type of wood in a room. Cool doggie!
On another note (Bb)... the only word I can find that somewhat rhymes with "orange"... is "pornage". I'm still looking...
Of course orange is still a great color for adding pop to a room! Suzanne Kasler has just added a new industrial iron light to her designs and guess what! It is orange! A perfect light for over a sink, small dining, laundry room, etc. See this great new light from a great designer! I love it!

I surely hope so!
"In my opinion, orange never went out. No color does, when it is used well."
Well said, Bruce!
What patrick (the other one) & bruce563 said.
CB2 certainly never gave up on it
Blech; orange and I have never gotten along very well. Unfortunately, I've just moved to Knoxville, TN, home of the Vols and a certain eyeball-searing shade of orange that can be found almost everywhere...
I agree with Patrick (the other one) too. Orange is one of my favorite colors, and I will continue to use it, even when it is no longer flavor of the month.
I am with you spaceapple not a fan of orange especially used in these examples. Various shades of orange can look very nice with reds, pinks, corals and some blue and greens.
Its the bright orange pop thing that I don't like and grey and orange reminds me of Nike.
I absolutely love orange, I think it can add an easy pop of color to an otherwise neutral room. I think I need that orange sofa in the sixth photo! Here are a few more images of orange inspiration:

I was always drawn to blue and green but in recent years I've started experimenting with orange. I actually painted one wall in my kitchen orange, and it has really made the kitchen a brighter and more cheerful place, especially since the kitchen only has one window.
I love orange and red as accents with white, dark grey and hardwood floors. I don't mind if it is en vogue or not.
I like it with a slate blue, but as an accent. As someone who cannot wear orange (my coloring... ugh), I like to use it in my decorating where I can. But I try to limit it to bargain finds, TJ Maxx-price points.
@spaceapple, I'm from Knoxville and can sympathize. I can't look at orange without thinking, "Football traffic! Go home NOW!"
Now, apricot...! That's a pretty color.
I painted our front door orange (colormatched an Hermes box) and it is beautiful. In or out, it is a great color and always makes me happy
@spaceapple and shawnamuffin: I grew up in Knoxville and haaaaated orange. But since I've moved to Nashville and have my own house to decorate as I please, orange has kind of grown on me. We bought the orange Tylosand corner sofa from Ikea and it brings a nice splash of color to our mostly black and white living room.
@Laughing Tiger: "door hinge" rhymes with orange, if you say it just right. (you can thank my 9-yr old for that)
@spaceapple and other TN residents, I'm from Illini country and can sympathize. Too much orange around here to think of it as "trendy" or original.
Orange was not around in the mid to late 80s, the height of the Southwestern look (a period to keep in mind before jumping on a trend). There was an orange placeholder, however: a sad, weak peach, usually paired with a sad, weak turquoise.
Did strong oranges go away in the 80s because they had been paired too much with brown in the 70s? Perhaps. When a color gets stuck with another color, the combo becomes a cliche. Kind of like turquoise and brown now.
But glorious, true orange returned in the 90s, and it's been gathering steam ever since. What looks wonderful to me right now: deep orange-amber hues paired with light silvery grays.
Orange is my brother's favorite color- has been since he was a little kid. But ever since he bought his house, he's been looking for ways to add pops of orange everywhere. I just moved out last month, and gotta say I'm SO glad to be getting rid of the orange. ;) (But I may be suffering from a slight overdose.)
P.S. Here's his (well, our, I used to live there too) house tour: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/chicago/house-tours/a-bright-beautiful-bungalow-from-an-ohio-trio-house-tour-103843
@rayma, it would be interesting to have a whole list of such doomed color combos. Before we moved in together, my husband collected orange ("flame") Le Creuset, while I collected the red. We're keeping them, of course, but sometimes a little voice in my head whispers, "McDonalds!"
Doomed Color Combos! I want the coffee table book!
Don't give up on the burnt orange Le Creuset! My 1970s burnt orange fondue pot was snapped up in two seconds at a garage sale. Young folks today (god I feel old) don't associate the color with 1970s fast food palaces, and they love it.
When I'm in my 80s (in 2045), there had better not be a craze for "vintage" Southwestern. Argh!
I can't believe I got rid of my orange Le Creuset Dutch oven a few years ago. I loved the color but the food always stuck. An old boyfriend had given it to me and I felt guilty doing it. Now I feel crappy that I don't have it, just for accent. I DO love orange now, for the first time ever. Not on the walls, but pops of it really please me.
Painted an accent wall in my living room and dining room orange a few months back. I love orange!
