My Favorite Room: Living Room
Specs: Just under 130 square feet

I love that we made a tiny room feel gracious and bright! Victorian Houses in Richmond, Virginia's Historic Fan District are so narrow they can feel like living in the barrel of a shotgun, but I think we made the most of this small space that empties into the front entry!

Many of these items I inherited, but to make it feel "less granny" we injected a few modern elements like the coffee table and the painting above the mantle. Sidebar: I painted the piece above the mantle one rainy afternoon when my precious little girls were plugged into a Disney movie because I was at the end of my parenting rope- ha! I love rooms to feel like a designer was never there, rooms that feel like they evolved over time, and rooms that are polished but not too precious. I love rooms that feel layered, textural, well loved, and beg people to come sit in them - no matter how small!

In a house with kids, things need to be fairly bulletproof, so slipcovered sofas, leather that only looks better with age, seagrass rugs that are tough as old boots, and vintage rugs take a beating with ease. We also use the heck out of this room (it's not just for gazing into!) so I store blocks, games, and puzzles in the boxes under the table. I love that the coffee table is glass without hard edges - perfect for kiddos!

I adore so many things in this room! I was named after the woman in the portrait on the right, and I cherish those two ancient paintings. Most of the items on the round table were passed down from my grandmother and my husband's grandmother. My grandmother made most of the vintage Christmas ornaments on the mantle, the sterling bowl is from a great, great aunt, and we just bought those cowgirl boots on a trip to Austin where we showed my eldest daughter the house she was born in and where I was pregnant with my youngest....!

This room is a fresh spin on family heritage; I think it is timeless yet right on trend. We love hanging out in here. This is where Santa comes, where my husband and I have morning coffee, where friends come to visit and where kids drop their shoes. It is the first room everyone sees when we come into this house, and it makes us feel right at home!

Thanks, Anne!
