My client wanted to make the most of the space for her two young boys sharing a bedroom, all the while keeping it fun, fanciful, and functional. Since the boys were sharing the room, she also wanted a spot for each boy to call their own. To top off the wishlist, they also needed a spot to sit and do homework. The boys longed for a castle themed room, and their wish was my command!
As a designer, when you are given a specific theme for a room design, the challenge is too not make it look hokey or too out of context to the rest of the home. Also of upmost importance is to allow the room to grow up with the child as inevitably the child will tire of "that theme". I kept the design clean, modern, and whimsical with my color palette of pale blue, gray, red and green.
Bunk beds allow for more floor space to play, and given the tight space in which the bed would sit, we decided to have a custom castle bed made. On the opposite wall I planned a full workspace wall. I gave each boy their own desk and set of bookshelves, as well as a shared storage area that also serves as a divider between the boys' workspaces.
