At first, I thought this addition was a stand-alone house! Though it is quite large, the contemporary renovation by architects at Dialect Design reorients the North Carolina family home around a new "climbing library" — an exciting combination of shelving, seating and stairs!
The library is the centerpiece to the 3 new children's bedrooms and a children's bathroom built specifically for 3 sisters — 3 sinks!

Sprout Side Table
I wish there were more photos of the stairs. I really do like the idea of what appears to be padded "upholstered" stair treads that double as seating. This may be something I should consider trying to duplicate, as I have two chihuahuas and would like them to be able to go up and down the stairs on their own without fear of falling and injuring themselves.
I see variations of this idea a lot, and most are usually quite ho-hum; sort of like, look where I squeezed a bookcase. But this one is very interesting. I think the vertical element added by cubbies along the wall really makes it look more intentional. The restrained use of exuberant color and the mixes of wood tones all add to the interest. Excellent job of taking a good idea and making better.
