We love the Michigan lakefront, but we've seen a few too many summer homes with yucky 'country kitsch' decor. Designed by architect Laurence Booth, this home is a world apart from that look—a refreshing, modern lake house with a sense of style inspired by the surrounding landscape of sand dunes, water, and forest.
Owners Irving Stenn and Judith Racht have an art gallery in Harbert, Michigan, where they specialize in contemporary art and objects. For the furnishings, they chose classic modern pieces: an Edward Wormley sofa, Hans Wegner Papa Bear chairs, a Finn Juhl Chieftain Chair, and a Wegner dining table.
Their art collection isn't too shabby either. Paintings by Jasper Johns and Carol Dolan bring life and color to the walls. Blue, in particular, plays a pivotal role, echoing the expanse of sea and sky visible through the large plate glass windows.

that is so appealing - no clichés!
i so want that dinning set!
I like the bedroom, living and dining rooms - but IMO all the bright colors on the screen porch compete with the views - it just doesn't feel as restful as the other parts of the house.
'yucky"? - are you 12?
In Sarah's defense, I think "yucky" is the perfect adjective to describe country kitsch.
Nice spread. I love Chicago Home Garden's summer homes. I can almost smell the scent of the lake and the pine trees. Thanks for covering.

@rexrayfan: Nicely stated!
My in-laws just purchased a place by Lake Michigan and I'm decorating our hangout as modern & airy as possible. Country kitsch and beachy cliches can be reserved for those without imagination!
