I feel as if I haven't written about a dark color in a bedroom in so long, and they've so thoroughly pervaded the internet these last few years. One half of this couple needed convincing on this point at first, but not for long. We originally discussed using a soft gray blue, but our test sample looked so dull and Colonial and, well — conventional that we finally moved on.
Ultimately, this is a chic apartment in Chelsea, it receives all that southern light, and it seems like it's what the room wanted.
The color is Mysterious from Benjamin Moore's Affinity collection, which is a deck I'm not used to carrying around with me, but suddenly there it was. It helps, too, that the room has all that light furniture, plus windows and doors to break up the walls and make the color dance.
Colors Used:
• Wall - Benjamin Moore Mysterious, AF-565
• Trim - White Dove (looks good with everything)

Shaw's Original Fir...
It's lovely. You dismissed one version of "conventional" for another, though.
I have the same color in my bedroom. I love it. It's like the night sky.
This takes a good photo but I wonder how it would be as to use this in a living space outside of a loft context. It would certainly be tomb like to paint a small bedroom that color here in the Pacific Northwest (except during July and August and our occasional sunny break through moments). But I suppose if your main objective is to be chic, you will achieve your goal with this color. :)
Looks fantastic.
Sasha2, it absolutely depends on the light, and the use the room will get. I saw a memorable designer showcase room in SF done in this kind of slate color...many years ago. The room had a full wall of tall windows and -- this is pivotal -- was a formal entertaining area that would be used mostly at night. Super dark walls can be magical at night, with good lighting. I question that aspect of the above room design. Those two little directional lamps are inadequate for the light eating walls. I hope there is a better, more diffuse light source we aren't seeing.
I think it's funny that you think that pictures of dark bedrooms have "thoroughly pervaded the internet these last few years." I think you may have just been seeing pictures of Jenna Lyons' bedroom over and over again. I have been wanting to go dark in my bedroom for a while, but I am having a difficult time finding examples. My room is north-facing and doesn't get a ton of light, but I want it to be cave-like and romantic. I love this color and have seen it before, but I just can't figure out if it would look okay in my room. So please keep posting pictures of dark bedrooms!
I love the dark color. I think it totally works in this bedroom.
Does anyone know where that sofa is from? I really like it!
This may be a silly question, would you paint the ceiling the same color? I imagine that a white ceiling would take away from the cavelike effect.
This is so lovely! I think, though, that as well as needing lots of natural light, you also need a decent sized room to pull off dark walls. I lust after having a dark-walled bedroom, but even though it faces west and is bathed in light most of the day, it is just too small - it would feel like a little cave of despair!
It looks great. Yes it seems like dark rooms have become trendy. I painted my bathroom black and originally I was going to paint the ceiling black too but the room was darkned enough with just the walls bieng black. I get no light in the bathroom. I used Benjamin Moore Inkwell.
Oops not Benjamin Moore Inkwell but Sherwin Wiliams Inkwell.
I love this bedroom. I would adore a bedroom that felt like a tomb. Seriously - I'm all about the dark and sleeepy.
Interesting.
I still prefer my hand-painted full 4 walls of bamboo. It's like going to sleep in a grove outdoors. So peaceful and calming!
